Yeah I am just giving you a heads up that in most places "property tax" means real estate tax, and the internet had people from all over. But most folks would also know that "personal property tax" is not real estate.
Es bueno senor, thanks for the Heads-up

To you guys talking about taxes, at least you don't have to deal with Michigan's outrageously expensive no-fault auto insurance...

It's gotten better the last few years, but still unjustifiably exorbitant.

At the risk of further hijacking the OP's thread, tell me more about this no-fault auto insurance thing

Back to the VIN issue. When I sold cars, I also did all the internet stuff for my dealership When new cars came in, the VIN automatically decoded and populated the website info for each new vehicle. Except it often got the trim wrong, or the transmission wrong. I always had to make corrections after the vehicles got added to the website.

Ya know, I lived many years in a no-fault state, and I enjoyed the coverage/protection. But I have come to believe, even if it sounds a bit paranoid, that insurance, companies, always, will, get, their, money. And so in a NF state, if someone damages my car and it is 100% their fault, I still have to (almost always) go through my carrier. And my carrier pays me and then down the road through subrogation the different carriers settle up, but I really do not trust that process. I would really just prefer that my insurance company doesn't know about accidents I have been in that were not my fault, and I would prefer to not bother them with claims neccesitated due to someone else's fault.

How it usually works:

File a claim even though other party was 100% at fault, and your rate will be raised at renewal time (even if no violations etc). If you inquire, they will say something like due to market conditions, or some vague bs. I am convinced that the increase would be less or not at all without that claim.

But now that I live in a non no-fault state, when I head people say shit like "yeah I got hit by some dummy who didn't have insurance and now I am SOL". But, I currently pay $580 annually, for myself and my spouse, two vehicles with full coverage on both, so not really complaining.

I'll make this quick for that reason LOL. But from my understanding, say I got into a crash, my insurance company (AAA) would pay for all damages and medical bills to the other person/people, regardless of whether they hit me, or I hit them. Along with this, say the other person is seriously injured or put into a life-long condition (e.g. they were paralyzed), then I believe my insurance would pay for their medical bills into perpetuity. Essentially, it costs more up front, but if anything were to happen, you'll almost never have to pay out of pocket for it.

And on the topic of titles actually, I'm still waiting for mine in the mail. I'm interested to see how specific it gets. But usually Michigan's titles and registrations just have the make and "body type." So my Focus ST was a "Ford Wagon 5-Door" or something. My Lincoln Mark VIII just says " Lincoln 2-Door." It's kinda odd.

IDK, maybe he doesn't have those kind of taxes in the state he resides. Although I'm not completely sure, each state is gonna get ya in one way or another. Here, it's PPTs every year, but cheaper tags. Other states don't have PPTs on vehicles, but they have higher tag prices (looking at you Georgia)
GA tags for any vehicle bought in at least the last ten years is $20 per year. However, when you purchase the vehicle, you pay 6.6 percent sales tax. If you keep a vehicle for a long time, it works out OK. If you trade/buy often, it is not good...........

See my other post for a general idea. But basically, it is designed so you get paid faster (because it is coming from your own company), but makes it harder to collect for pain and suffering. Also, rates are higher. Also causes a lot of issues with fraud claims- "runners" getting paid a finders fee to find accident victims and steer them toward chiropractors (who are also in on the scam) and run up bills. That is the two cent version of a thousand dollar story.

I actually was in an accident as a passenger years ago, and had a heck of a time getting real medical care and real legal advice- they all thought I was "in on it" too and didn't take my issues seriously.

They charge a vehicle tax, sure. "Property tax" refers to real estate 99% of the time.
States enacting tax on cars, trucks, boats, RV, etc. often refer to the tax as property tax.
Example " motor vehicles are subject to a local property tax under Connecticut state law. "

Not trying to argue here, so no ill will meant, but it will nearly always be called "(something) property tax". Like vehicle property tax, or local property tax. In 99% of situations nationwide, simply saying "property tax" will be interpreted to mean real estate taxes.

Meh, one county says
" Real property consists of real estate and any permanently affixed improvements, such as buildings. Personal property consists of: (a) Furniture, fixtures, machinery, equipment, inventory or any other personal property used in business. (b) Aircraft and boats/motors owned by any individual or corporation."

And California says, " . Property is defined as all matters and things—real, personal, and mixed—that a private party can own."
page 6. They also make a distinction between real and personal property.
https://www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/pdf/pub29.pdf

But all that nitpicking aside, I hear what you're saying- in general usage "property tax" means tax on land or house, like usually kleenex means any brand of paper facial tissue and not an exact brand.
