So - it's wired on the XLT?
The one that comes from the factory built into the B-pillar/driver door is hardwired. The one available from Ford Accessories/your dealer's parts department is battery powered and attaches to the vehicle via adhesive. Technically it should be possible to mod that into an XL, but it's much easier to go the stick-on route.

So, yes, Maverick XLT and Lariat get a hardwired keypad.

Has to unfortunately be programmed with Ford's IDS software, there are no provisions to program it yourself with Forscan and they changed the keypads from the old version which used to be able to be programmed like an extra key. It's unfortunate and I recommend people pay the $195 for the wireless keypad option when they order rather than try to rely on your local dealer to program it for a reasonable amount of money. When I had my keypad programmed it took the tech less than 10 minutes but many here have reported that their dealer wants to charge them 100-200 dollars to program it, most likely because they are not familiar with it and how it gets programmed.

But do you have to replace the whole thing not just replacing batteries?

Technically they are not serviceable meaning Ford did not design it to be able to have batteries replaced. That being said it is possible to disassemble the keypad to replace batteries.
