Time Magazine's - America's Most Iconic Companies

January 8, 2025

In 2026, America celebrates its 250th birthday. Within those years, the country has built a legacy as an incubator of globally relevant companies and brands, and an economic powerhouse. To paint a picture of that business legacy, TIME and Statista conducted a nationally representative survey of U.S. residents to rank the 250 American companies that are not only commercially successful, but have played a vital role in shaping culture and society.
...

Ford Motor Company, which tops the list, has long aligned its brand with the American identity. Known for making cars accessible to the masses by bringing down production costs through the assembly line and distributing it across the U.S. via a locally-based dealer-franchise system, Ford transformed the manufacturing process and also transportation for the average American, reshaping the development of cities and suburbs. Now, it’s being put in a position to redefine the future of mobility in the country, as it experiments with self-driving cars, and works to bring down prices on its electric vehicles. “Just as my great-grandfather put the world on wheels to give people the freedom of movement, our approach to the modern era is rooted in that same spirit. Innovation is not just about building batteries or technology for its own sake; it is about making people’s lives better,” says Bill Ford, Ford’s Executive Chair. “We are leveraging our position as the largest hourly auto employer in the U.S. to ensure that the future of transportation is built by American workers for everyday American families.”

Has anyone ever been surveyed in this manner ? In all my life I've never been surveyed and never even known anyone who has ever been surveyed.

I'm not doubting or disputing this claim to fame But I am doubting the way they/them come to these conclusions.

Penny for your thoughts ?

Some basic statistics: When you get to a total group size (called a population in statistics) the size of the US population of greater than 340 million, it only takes a sample size of 1000 to be considered statistically significant. In other words, you can extrapolate up from the 1000 and confidently assume they represent the entire population. You can make the sample larger than that but you experience diminishing returns past that point.

So if they surveyed 1000 people from the US population of 340 million, the chances of you being or knowing one of them would be an incredibly small number.

In reality, the actual sample size they are using could be even smaller but it's also likely they just paid some other company who's in the business of surveying for that information.

What strikes me about this designation is not the type of statistical analysis used, but the conclusion. Ford is the most recalled vehicle in the nation (I believe. I’m sure I’ll be corrected if wrong) How is that a company to be lauded? The quotes in the article sound much like so much marketing hype. Sure, ford pioneered mass marketed cars, but that was 110 years ago. And the logo is embedded in national history, but the current product and company?
Let me be clear. My 22 maverick xl hybrid has been fine. But I’m not sure ford in general is the tops in the auto world.

It’s getting hard to believe anything anymore, even our own eyes are being manipulated.

Ah, I just realized there was a breakdown of how they conducted this as a link from the article.

A lot of surveying comes down to how a question is asked. I've added what they say they asked about. So there's way more that is being asked than just "how do you feel about their product right now?" They also say the survey was an "independent survey of more than 10,000 members of the U.S. general population" so they aren't only asking owners of the products. Non owners aren't likely even aware of the recalls and may have a very different idea of the company than someone who does live with recall after recall.

  • High Recognition and Familiarity: The ability to identify a company based on its visual elements, such as its logo, colors, or packaging, without explicitly seeing the company name.
  • Cultural Significance and Impact: The extent to which a company's actions, values, products, or presence influence the beliefs, behaviors, and social norms of a community or society.
  • Emotional Connection: The strong feeling or bond individuals develop with a company based on positive experiences, shared values, or trust.
  • Resilience: The company’s capacity to adapt to and overcome challenges, including market shifts, internal changes, or external disruptions.
  • Americanness: A qualitative judgment of how strongly a company's brand, culture, operations, and market presence reflect traits commonly associated with U.S. business identity. This criterion synthesizes signals such as origin, governance, communication style, design ethos, and public perception to gauge the company’s perceived "Americanness," rather than relying on strict legal or geographic status.

Makes perfect sense. What they ask is important. Yes, ford is an iconic American brand. But as a car guy, that’s not enough for me in particular. But I get where the conclusion comes from.

I’ve heard of the “Harris Poll” and come to think of it, I have never known anyone named Harris. 🤔
Were all Harris’ captured by aliens and told what to say when polled?
Ancient alien theorist say, “YES”!

Yeah, the phrase "as a car guy" makes you different than many other Americans and gives you a different set of ideals when it comes to autos. Which I understand and appreciate. The vehicle I came out of last was a 20 year old Honda Accord that I never had any major trouble with and I will admit to struggling somewhat with the idea of knowing about the recalls and such. I ended up making the decision for the Mav for a number of reasons that ended up outweighing the potential for issues and, so far at least, I've been more happy with the Mav than I ever would have expected to be.

I like that tailgate
Yes, and the spot for the tag in the center. If only Ford would have used AI to help them design the back end!

I've been contacted for an automotive manufacturer survey and a healthcare provider survey in the past 24 hours.

It's not a JD Power quality survey. It's a survey about icons. Ford has been building cars for more than 120 years, and is still a family-owned company, with worldwide recognition. Recalls have nothing to do with its status as an icon.
