26 XLT on CT/NY parkways

My vehicle is registered in Vermont and since it "has a bed it's a truck." This is the VT DMV rule.

Am I going to get a ticket on parkways? No decals, not a.work truck, no equipment ever.

I regularly drove on the Taconic Parkway in my Mazda B2200 back in the day with passenger plates on it with no issue from "Johnny Law"....fun side comment about that roadway...I heard it best described as "Driving through a petting zoo at 60 MPH"

No problem in New York either. My son drives every day on the Southern State Parkway with a full size Denali pickup, and has never been stopped on any NYS roads, as long as you don't have commercial license plates.

Why are people so afraid?


Connecticut defines a truck on restricted parkways (Merritt, Wilbur Cross, Hutchison) as any vehicle designed for transporting property or freight, typically identified by commercial registration or external branding. All trailers, rental trucks (U-Haul/Penske), box trucks, and most combination-plate vehicles are strictly prohibited, regardless of size.


In New York, a "truck" on a parkway is generally defined as any commercial vehicle, or any vehicle with commercial plates, that has 2 axles and 6 tires, or 3 or more axles. These vehicles, along with trailers, are prohibited on New York State and NYC parkways, which are restricted to passenger vehicles only. [1, 2, 3, 4]

In NY, it's the license plate that matters. A commercial plate vehicle is not allowed on NY Parkways, Any pickup with private plates is fine

NYS has commercial and passenger. VT for anything with a bed is TRK

Then it's not a restricted commercial vehicle.
