I have a nice 4 bike hitch drop down mount Yakima rack but it won’t let me put the tailgate all the way down. Also can’t put truck in the garage with it on.

I can't fix your garage problem, but I put a 6 inch hitch extender to allow my tailgate to go 100% down.

I love DIY solutions as much as the next guy, but I'd buy a hitch rack. Keeps the bed open and you don't have to remove and install the wheels twice for each outing. I know racks are expensive, so a much cheaper solution is to get a tailgate pad to throw the bikes over. Since you're obviously handy, you could even make one yourself.

I have the Race Face T3 pad and it'll carry 2 bikes. The inner surface won't scratch the exterior, but you have to make sure the tailgate is clean before you install it. Also, if you have rear parking assist it needs to be turned off when bikes are carried over the tailgate.

Bikes don't ever touch the bumper. Make sure your tailgate is clean like was stated. I wish I had a picture with bikes over it. But here's my pad in place. It has a removable velcro rear camera portal. In theory it can carry 5 bikes. I say 3. When carrying 2 bikes I put them on the sides to not block the camera.

Here is my partially completed mount for anchoring 2 Delta fork mounts. It will be clamped down with a single 3/8” bolt thru the board w/clamp under bed rail. It should allow me to carry my road bikes without leaving tailgate down.

I put this in the front of the bed of my Maverick. I oop the straps through the front tie downs and screw them down.

I have a tri-fold. It fits the bikes, but it will block your middle rearward view. Sorry I didn't mention that.
