This is what happened but it didnt take the top of the piston out and when disassembled the broken peices were within the rings in the bore. Ecoboost rotating assemblies are all forged, including the pistons. Im doing things the engineers just didnt plan for.It’s toasted for sure. It looks like a big section of piston chunked off above and below the ring which usually means the rings got heated up and expanded pushing against each other with no where to go. That ends up putting tremendous pressure on the piston and will break a chunk off.
It usually just chunks the top of the piston off because the lower half of the piston has a bunch more metal to push away from the rings. In this case it looks like the lower part of the piston got pushed away from the rings expanding as well since there’s not a lot of piston material above the lower ring and below the upper ring. Above the oil control ring as well. Pretty wicked.
