Mav would not start last week …… error messages immediately popped up stating “Shift Sys Fault”, “Service Vehicle Soon”, and something about “Hill Start Assist and parking brake“. The Rotary Shift knob was locked and would not shift into any gear position. 2 years of ownership and 23k miles.
Had to call Ford Roadside Assist and have it towed to dealer. Problem diagnosed as faulty gear shift selector. Fortunately there was no issue with parts availability and the dealer was able to get one delivered next day. Only took day and a half to get fixed and I’m now back on the road.
In case anyone runs into this issue in future, I’m attaching dash video of what happened when the issue came up. Also attaching pics of the defective part that was replaced.

Mine did the same thing. I unplugged the battery and works fine now.
i wonder if the dealer even tried that before replacing mine. Probably not. oh well, maybe I have a functional spare part if needed in future.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

Good idea just hold on to it.
now that I think about it. I don’t think the dealer should have left the part in the truck when they returned it to me. I believe warranty parts are supposed to be held for warranty parts return. I used to work for VW/Mazda/Dodge dealer a long time ago and that’s how it worked for those three, I would assume Ford is the same.
Hope I didn’t get dealer in trouble with Ford since I just sent message to FMC.

Wait, so is the Dial shifter you have is the old one or the new one? They did replace it? Can you upload the work order receipt?

Retired Ford parts guy here. If Ford calls back the warrantied part from your dealer and they can't find it Ford will not pay the dealer for the repair. The tech was supposed to write the RO# on the box and turn it in to the parts department.

Oh very interesting! Thanks for including that work order. Ive been seeing this Shift fault alot for the hybrid users, not for ecoboost drivers. Im surprised this happened to you. I think i am going to buy one of these Dial shift modules and keep it under the backseat. This has left a lot of people stranded.
