Drive modes actually change the brake feel. Try slippery. It requires a lot more pressure but it is much less jerky. It allows you to coast forever too.
Look into offline maps with Google Maps. It will download the entire region of your specified area and save the data to your phone so you still have GPS even if you lose service. It's a good Fail-Safe and doesn't require you to bring an additional device with you.
