Can an Engineer explain to me the thought process behind encasing a steel ball in a plastic housing? I’ve replaced the front links last year and am now in the process of replacing the rears with MOOG greasable steel links, and they are cheaper.

I don’t have the exact materials you used. I have a multitude of foam pads in varying abrasivenes and I use Meguiars 105 Ultra Cut followed by 205 Ultra Finishing compound, pads lubricated with Griots Speed Shine. I think I’ll give t a try.
