For this specific trip of 8.8 miles you did 7 of those miles on electric (about 80%) so that could easily equate to 80+ mpg.

Try a different USB cable they all tend to break after a while and it sounds like yours might be on its way out. That's a lot more likely than a problem with the wiring of the port.

Where were you able to pay for it and download it? Is it just the ford site you can get a day pass to? I had that on a Subaru Outback I had previously and was able to log on and download the service manual and piles up updates in pdf format.
