Good reminder to us weekend truck warriors to take a piece of plywood the width of the bed and the height of the cab and prop it up vertically to protect the window. Just be sure the wind pressure doesn't send it flying out the rear as you drive to the dump.

I don’t do enough work to justify it but man, for a work truck that’s a great idea
A BakFlip mx4 would have certainly protected "NeedForSteve"s back window.

Nobody intends on this happening. But, this one incident may justify the cost of a BakFlip bed cover.

Sorry to see that but it actually happens a bunch. I don't know how many back glasses I replaced in our trucks at work from people loading stuff in the bed. My first damage to my Mav happened at about 800 miles when on a trip to CA. from NM. I got caught in a short but intense sandstorm at 65 mph and it left hundreds of chips in my front end and windshield.

I always hear people talk about getting the first scratch out of the way on a new truck, so it’s not such a worry when you scratch it again. Well I’ve scratched the bed up pretty good doing yard work, but today clearing limbs got the best of me…

popped the edge of the back glass with a pretty big limb and it shattered like a cheap coffee table. This pic doesn’t do it justice, in the sunlight you could see it spider-webbed all the way across. Cleanup is not gonna be fun.
Thanks for posting. Windshields and side glass can be hard to shatter and can make a vehicle a coffin when driven into the drink. Sorry for your loss but it might save someone's life after reading this post, providing they keep their wits.

definitely, just pop the edge with something hard and you can practically push the window out (I know because I almost did it by mistake right after it shattered)

I had that happen in my Tesla out in the Mojave desert. Maybe 20 seconds of blowing “sand”. It’s more like small gravel flying through the air at 50+ mph. Head lights, windshield, sun roof, passenger mirror, passenger front and rear side windows, repaint front clip and entire right side of car. $17,000 in repairs.
