It specifies 87+ but the manual states For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended so I use premium.

The last part of the manual (go ahead a break the wrapper - you need it) section is probably more important than the 91 part, unless you are towing or it's summer.
Frankly with hybrid the fact the engine isn't getting properly warmed up on perhaps regular basis is more a cause for concern than 91 part also.

SELECTING THE CORRECT FUEL

Your vehicle operates on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some fuel stations, particularly those in high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating below 87. The use of these fuels could result in engine damage that will not be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer. See Towing a Trailer.
Do not be concerned if the engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if the engine knocks heavily while using fuel with the recommended octane rating, contact an authorized dealer to prevent any engine damage.

I will note that virtually ALL modern engines which employ knock sensors will have a slight to significant improvement in throttle response, torque and MPG, due to the ability to advance ignition (and in some cases adjust valve) timing until the knock sensor senses knock.

For non-performance/non-premium vehicles, OEM's commonly rate a given power train at BASE 87 octane, as it lowers operating cost. They may or may not make statements about higher octane, except where performance, or say towing, would benefit.

You can determine if an engine can exploit higher octane by comparing ignition timing PID(s) during light to moderate acceleration--easiest conditions to see the timing change, versus at WOT, where the fuel mapping is very enriched. I have not done this comparo, or seat of pants comparo with the Mav hybrid.

The hybrid has a lean burn engine, so you will not get more power out of it by using higher octane, or turbo charging it. At 30 cents a gallon more for 91 octane you may get a small increase when accelerating it's up to you.

Been putting Sheetz 88 in. No problems and mileage seems the same as 87 and it’s cheaper
