your buddy is going to dyno E30 though correct, some people believe HP is compounding, and they will see 350 hp from few boltons & a tune on these things, i used Stratified & alan @ edge, but most i saw on my focus st was just shy of 280, These 8 speeds make a ton of difference in getting down the road though good luck with The tuning

I'm not sure if he'll put it on the dyno, but I don't suspect I'd need one for his goals. I'm positive that he's got a good understanding on this.

I know Alan really well. We actually help each other quite a bit. One of his Ranger customers is trying out my transmission tune. This is the both of us in these videos:

I think I'm pretty close to where I want the transmission behavior to be. Ready for @COBB Tuning to add some tables for shift verification to play with a bit. I do notice that even though I've disabled torque converter lockup in the first 4 gears (really 3), I still see that in the middle of 4th, during normal and moderate throttle, the torque converter locks up. I've gone through the tables and haven't had anything stand out at me, but I'll keep looking, I suppose. I may switch to HP Tuners and see if I can replicate or change as there are a few more tables available.

All that said, it is more enjoyable to drive now. I also like that when I need it to go down a gear when going uphill, it downshifts pretty quickly to keep it from lugging and dropping speed.

I do want to play with the tow setting... I am considering making 2nd gear active for when I want to tow at/near the limit of what the truck is rated for. I did not want to change the stock tow setting on my Ranger, but the first time I towed convinced me otherwise. :)

I like it.
move also toyed with the idea of heavier oil. Especially since like you said it’s different in other places. Similar to the 5w50 ford runs in performance vehicles.
only reason I haven’t is because I’ve got such high mileage out of my stuff with 5w30. I know the heavier would make me feel better but just can’t get away from what has worked so good in the past.
I agree with the intercooler. I tend to be more a meth guy. It’s does everything better than an intercooler. But also like you said if the stock one comes apart then maybe. But fords been on it lately. I’m pushing over 500whp in my rs on the stock unit with no issues yet. Using meth for the iat’s.
I’m suprised you’re not going colder plugs. It’s pretty much a given for a tuned vehicle. Although not needed I suppose if you’re not gonna push harder with e30. I have my ngk’s ready for install. Just need some time

I see people say this stuff all the time, then you go look at the same engine being used in Europe and the oil spec is thicker (or hell, the same engine being used in a different vehicle here in the states). The pump wasn't designed for any specific weight of oil and technically thicker oil raises pressure, not the other way around.

The oil sample will tell me if the selection was an appropriate move. I've been doing this for a little while, so it's not a blind move.

Go watch this guy a little bit. I've met the guy a few times and have taken one of his classes. You choose oil based on application and usage.

Very curious as to what your next sample will show. If had the stock fill oil come back low like that but subsequent ones with a better 5-30 where fine.
I’ve been seriously thinking of 5w50 for my summer stuff as I regularly drive 14 plus hours at a time and am hauling a decent amount in the summer heat.
Plus it would make my oil all the same as my other performance stuff. Just haven’t made the move yet.

Update ATP, those tables were added yesterday!

My second oil sample came in today. Although wear metals and contaminates are improving, as I would expect, the oil still sheard under a 30 weight. There is also a little more fuel in the oil than I would like. So it sheared more than the original fill, but had less fuel in it.

We'll see how the Motul 300v 5w40 holds up in 4-8 months. :)

I forgot to update this, but I did find out what caused the 4th gear weirdness. The truck drives much smoother in 4th gear now.

I got a free Gentex mirror with Homelink and auto dimming. It was given to me for my Ranger, but I don't think I can easily swap it out on that, so instead, I followed the directions on this board to buy some parts and make a harness for adding the mirror to the Maverick. I'll install it tomorrow as I have already started drinking. :)

Other than that, I've been pretty happy with the tune I did on the engine and transmission, making it more enjoyable to drive. I do need to do some more playing with the active grille shutters. At cruise, charge temps will be about 20F higher than ambient, but as soon as I get into any boost, the charge temps come down fairly quickly. I have already adjusted the cooling demand for the active shutters to open up sooner, but I want to find a good point where temps come down sooner/don't raise as high, but still maintain functionality of the shutters. The OEM intercooler isn't as small as some seem to think, so I don't have a desire to replace. I do think a lot of the additional cooling people see from the aftermarket options is from the removal of these shutters.

interesting theory... I think the shutters can be removed pretty easily and the motor/solenoid left in place to avoid a check engine light, but I definitely think they have aero value cruising at 60-80.

That is definitely and option for people. They can just remove the lower shutters if they want. I would like to retain shutter operation as well as leave the car as fully functional as possible. Ultimately, this is my wife's vehicle, so she gets final say. She would "let" me do things like this if I was testing for business concerns, but I like utilizing tech if I can.

Got the Homelink mirror installed. The PnP harness made it pretty simple. Garage door programming took me a few tries. Ultimately I used the app on the garage door to get it all working.

Now that I know how to program these, I should probably program my Jeep. It's always had a Homelink mirror, but I never bothered to look up programming. :p

This was a great read! Can you explain why the torque converter locking up in 4th gear(or any other gear I suppose) was especially annoying? I don't know much about how all that works and I'm genuinely interested!

The theory and intent seems to be fuel economy. The problem is that there are so many gear ratios that you get into 4th at low speeds in urban driving and the powertrain lugs.

In practice how that works and how it's better when the TCM is changed, I'll leave that to Jason and other experts!
