Saw some old posts focused around finding solid, one-piece black lug nuts for the maverick. I'm willing to admit i spent way too much time on such a simple thing, but here is what I ended up with:

  • Gorilla 61641BC: set of 4 wheel locks in black (~$30). I personally use this type on all my vehicles as they seem to be a small step up from the standard, more basic wheel locks that that use a star pattern on the head or have a slotted groove on the side. These use the traditional slotted groove on the side (unique to your 'key'), but also include a free-spinning 'shield' around the lug nut. This allegedly makes it more difficult for someone to hammer an oversized socket onto the nut for removal.

  • Gorilla 61148BCX: Had to purchase in a set of 20 (~$80). It looks like there is a ton of confusion on here and around the open market as these seem to be a fairly uncommon model. If you google the part number you'll find them available in large batches or individually for ~$5/ea. I wanted these (as opposed to the commonly recommended 61148FSBC) because they have the 'beveled' head and are overall a tiny bit shorter. These were actually fairly difficult to find online at a reasonable price with a listing that indicated I'd actually receive the correct version. The eBay listing i purchased from had a picture with them and the correct part number (and listed as 'charger/challenger replacements'), but coincidentally sent me the incorrect version the first go around.

I purchased the same lugs and have run them on a couple vehicles now for many miles with no problems. You can get a closer/better match for the locks - the 96641BDX are almost identical to the lugs themselves and at first glance really do look identical. The ones you used are an Acorn end vs Acorn Bulge like both the OEM and Gorilla lugs you installed. That is why you can see more of the wheel around the lock vs. the lugs. I don't think your wheels are going to fall off or anything, but technically not correct for this application. Looks good though of course.

I'm surprised how much of a difference that makes. Very nice. (y)

I have to say I got lost down the rabbit hole of lug nut shapes, sizes, and spec. According to this there is only a 6% difference in seating area between the two, which I don't think will make much difference for my pavement princess.

You are correct there is a nominal amount of unpainted/silver metal of the rim visible around the edge of these new lug nuts, but you have to be pretty much head on with the wheels to see or notice.

I'd pivot to a model that is Acorn Bulge if it was non-locking. I saw the 96641BDX, but felt like 20 locking lugs would be a pain in the ass for some reason.

No wheel locks for me. Had too many experiences where lugnet key gets misplaced by someone or a service personnel. Also bought a used specialty vehicle once to find they had wheel locks and no wheel key anywhere in the vehicle contrary to what they told me. Luckily a metric socket hammered on allowed me to remove them all without wheel damage. That was the last time for me. I don't think they are worth the hassle unless you in in a place like NYC.

It would be a PITA with 20! But the 96641BDX is a set of 4, which is why it works so well. It really does look just like the other 16 lugs unless you give it a second look.

One thing I do no matter what is to purchase a matching replacement key and leave it in a safe place at home. Cheap insurance just in case.
