2023 Ecoboost XLT AWD with ~18.5k miles on it.

So far I really like the truck and I haven't had any real issues with it except the minor annoying things listed below, which I hope you guys and gals can help shed some light on.

1. When I slow down and get below ~15 mph there is a very audible deep thump coming from the rear passenger side. It's deep enough to notice in the frame, if paying attention. It happens if I'm coasting or breaking and nope, it's not a loose seat or anything loose in the bed or elsewhere in the truck. Could it be something with the AWD?

2. When slowing down and almost at a standstill the engine idles funny (to me). It goes down to about the normal idle but then have several short surges up and down before finally settling down. My foot is off the gas pedal at this time so it's all happening without me doing anything. I've wondered at times if it really is the engine or if it's related to the turbo.

3. Is the turbo really really loud or do I have vacuum leak? There is a very noticeable wooshy sound coming from the engine compartment at times and it doesn't sound quite right to me. It certainly doesn't sound anything like the 2020 Volvo S60 T5 my wife drives.

4. My truck got battered by hail twice last year and I finally got it fixed in December. When I got the truck back early January the auto start/stop was disabled. Which was great since I'm not a fan. However, it was only disabled until I plugged in my phone via the USB connection to get Android Auto. going Then it suddenly reappeared and now I'm stuck with it again. What the heck?

Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks y'all.

Hello! Could you please send us a private message with your VIN and the name and location of your Ford dealer? I'd like to see how I can assist you with this noise concern.

Did you ever find the cause of your thumping noise? I am experiencing the exact same issue

After reading this thread I'm pretty sure it's the RDU. I think it needs to be reset.

I did get the local Ford dealership to complete the service bulletin related to the RDU, but now it's even louder. I don't believe they actually reset it though, so that's next on my list. Just need to figure out how to do it, via Forscan I assume.

Btw, the local Ford dealership techs seem very poorly trained on anything computer related, you might have better luck where you are. After owning a couple of Volvo's I'm a bit shocked how bad the Ford service quality is.

Thank you for sharing that thread. That sounds like EXACTLY the issue I am experiencing. Ive had my truck at the dealer for a week now and they haven't been able to find the issue. I sent them that thread and they told me they couldn't act on anything without hearing back from Ford, which is seriously frustrating. I have a FORScan OBD tool coming in tomorrow so I'm just going to take my truck back and fix it myself if they can't get a handle on it by the time it comes in.

Just curious if you found out anything else? I haven't been able to get the RDU reset but after Ford did the TSB and changed the oil etc. the thud is worse than ever and there's a rev issue too when it happens (truck revs slightly after the thud). Really weird.

Unfortunately, not a lot of good news. Ford replaced my RDU entirely and it did not fix the issue. They then replaced the PTU entirely and it still did not fix the issue. They were completely stumped by the problem so I actually just accepted a buy back and got put into a new maverick (which hopefully will not develop the same issue).

I'm not sure if a buyback is an option in your scenario but it was the only way out for me. I'd be happy to share more info about that process if it's something you might be interested in pursuing.

Man, that sucks, but glad you got a new Maverick out of it.

Yeah thanks I'd like to find out more about the buyback process. I didn't even know that was an option!

You'll have to start the process by calling the Ford customer service number at (800) 392-3673 and telling them you want to start a buyback and why. They'll then review your case and decide if your case qualifies. My case qualifies under my states Lemon Law, but if they have failed several repairs on your truck they should qualify you too.

From there, you'll be transitioned to the RAV (Re-aquired vehicles) team. They will get some info from you via email and then formulate an offer. The offer starts at what you paid (including tax title license), minus a fee for usage. You can decide if your happy with the offer or not before accepting. They offered me a $1500 discount on my new truck for the trouble.

The whole process took about 3 weeks.

Just wanted to follow up on this older thread in case someone else have these issues.

Regarding #1: The "thump" issue went away after a proper tech (there was only one at this dealership, the others were oil-changers, their words) drove it, ran diagnostics, did some research and determined it was due to a faulty AWD unit. Which is pretty much what I told them in the first place. But kudos to Gem City Ford for finally getting there, ordering the part and spending a day changing it out.

Regarding #2: This went away for a short time after the rear AWD unit was replaced but after ~5,000 miles or so it came back and is worse than it ever was. Just about every time I coast or brake to idle, it revs wildly up and down like it's catching it's breath before finally settling down. But now the throttle response has become very slow and jerky, leaving the car to "lurch" when accelerating out of idle.

Regarding #3: The wooshy "breathing" sound is still there and it really sounds like there's a vacuum leak or something somewhere, but hell if I've been able to find it. The engine just sounds like it's struggling a lot. Two different Ford dealerships tell me it's "normal". And maybe it is, but lord, it just sounds awful.

Regarding #4: Auto start/stop is still there as it was when I bought it new. I can live with that. However, the screen and backup camera have started to give me issues. The backup camera occassionally freezes up and the screen has done the same while listening to the radio. Bah.
