Why am I running LED Daytime Running Lights?

I got to thinking about how expensive the LED lighting is for the Maverick to replace, and I'm thinking why am I bothering to run LED daytime running lights on my 2022 hybrid? They're not required by law in my state, and they are expensive to replace.

To those who imply they save lives, I'm not buying it. I'm turning them off.

To each their own. I plan to do the same. When it's a very dark gray day, or foggy, I'll turn the headlights on.

Then you get to be one of the cars I have a hard time seeing when I'm driving due east in the morning getting blinded by the sun.

When your argument starts with "I refuse to believe they're useful" how is anyone supposed to have a conversation about it.

You do you. Nobody can make you keep them on. That being said, they are designed to last the life of the truck (barring any manufacturing defects), and studies have shown that using them does reduce the chances of a crash. People are not just implying that they save lives, there have been studies that show they are effective at reducing crashes.

Here is just one study.

"The study – published in the Journal of Safety Research – was compiled using police data from more than 119,606 car crashes between 2010 and 2017 in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.
According to Monash University researchers Angelo D’Elia and Stuart Newstead, vehicles equipped with DRLs were 7.6 per cent less likely to be involved in a car crash during the day.
At dusk and dawn, DRLs were found to reduce the risk of a crash by 20.3 per cent – contributing to an overall reduction of 8.8 per cent during ‘non night-time hours’."

Here is another, which self-admits it was based on data from only 9 states and a limited number of vehicle models. It showed that there was "not statistically significant overall effects", but check out the part I bolded and underlined. Directly applies to the Maverick as a "light truck"....

"In 2008 a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study examined the impact of DRLs against three types of crrashes:
(1) two-passenger vehicle crashes excluding rear-end crashes;
(2) single-passenger-vehicle to pedestrians/cyclists crashes; and
(3) single passenger-vehicle to motorcycle crashes.

Each crash type was examined at three crash severity levels—fatal, injury and all severity. The analysis found that DRLs have no statistically significant overall effects on the three target crashes. When combining these three target crashes into one target crash, the DRL effects were also not statistically significant.

When examined separately for passenger cars and light trucks/vans (LTVs), DRLs in LTVs significantly reduced LTVs’ involvements in the target two-vehicle crashes by 5.7 percent."

Those DRL lights should last about 100 years. I think you are assuming that they will burn out like old incandescent bulbs. They don't, so leave them on.

My Lariat has LED DRL's. I can't speak for others.

I don't think that a lot of U.S. states have laws requiring DRLs. As a consequence, they use the lowbeams at half power, but I think you have to turn them on in the settings. They are required in Canada, so they get the turn signal lights at half power as DRLs. Also the Lariats always get dedicated DRLs, as they have the extra lights in the tops of the headlights. For 5% fewer accidents and lower insurance as a result, I would have thought that everyone would want them, but I guess politics gets in the way for sanity.

DRL is standard on all trims
you have to enable DRL in the vehicle settings under 'lighting'

Most mavericks I see have their DRL’s turned off, including mine.

They wouldn’t help avoid the morons who look at their phones instead of the road.

Politics has nothing to do with it. I just don't want to wear them out if I don't feel they're needed.

Source for the half power claim ? Be being a van at a stop light and switch headlight on. I bet you won't see a difference.

I work in a sign shop. We use a lot of leds. They last so long we warranty them for 10 years. Anything else 3 to 5 ( neon 3 years). Use the leds.
