Thanks for the thread, based on your pics i can see they changed the clip section to have a much bigger area for adhesion. I’m a bit upset I have the older version, but what can you do?

My ONLY criticism of the product is on the tailgate piece. There are screws holding it down in the section of the tailgate piece closest to you with the tailgate down, but curiously nothing at ALL holding it down in the part closest to the bed, so I anticipate issues with stuff sliding up under there, nothing at all to stop it. A poor design element, in my opinion.

I was going to call the dealer about this becasue I noticed it on mine at delivery. Looks like it is an issue we will have to solve ourselves. My first thought would be to use 3m double sided tape to hold it down like other add-on car parts do.

If there is any gap between the bottom of the tailgate liner and the bottom of the tailgate, taping it will be applying a constant spring-load up on the tape. I don't know if the tape will be able to resist that spring force long term. It might be better to caulk that edge/gap with a silicone sealant so the plastic of the liner isn't constantly trying to straighten out. Practice doing good fillets first before munging up your truck.

That spring load will still be there if there is a gap no matter what medium I use to adhere it unless it displaces it enough that the plastic material will then add a compressive load as it tries to go back to normal or, is just thick enough that it takes up the distance as is, which is what you are talking about.

The 3M tape used for small "bolt ons" (tape ons?) like small trunk lip wings, window louvers, etc. has a thickness to it (maybe 1/16") and has always held really well in any application I have used.

I just don't get why they left it like this on purpose.

I just picked up my bed liner from the parts department of my old job (worked at the dealer in sales for 23 years). Box is crazy big but I digress. I only added the tailgate piece for now (wanted to bring inside the other pieces to get warm and flatten out (headboard piece and especially the floor). But the tailgate was 95% flat. And I can also say, DESIGN FLAW!! Why they didn't figure out a way to keep the bottom part connected somehow (either with 2 extra holes from the bottle openers to hold it down) or some 3M tape is beyond me.

So it just hit me, for those who still have both bottle openers (I haven't added the tailgate assist and probably won't, but you never know). Snce that is a raised bracket, I have some 3M automotive double sided tape and I'm gonna cut two small squares and put on the top of each bracket that the tailgate panel touches. That should be enough to hold it down some more.

Oh, and I would strongly advise NOT caulking the bottom part. Water will always work it's way in there while the gate is up (even a tiny amount). If the entire bottom is caulked, water would have nowhere to go but sit under the panel. If the two spots I mentioned don't work, maybe add an extra small square dead center at the bottom of the tailgate. I'll try today once the sun comes out and warms up the plastic some.

So far the most important part of the liner for me has been the tailgate portion. When hauling yard timbers with the tailgate in the half way down position they rest against the liner rather than scratching the paint which they would do otherwise. I opted for just the tailgate liner and use the heavy Rough Country mat on the bed.

As you can see in the pic, the troublesome piece on the tailgate is right over the bolts for the bottle opener/tie downs, I'm sorely tempted to drill a hole and reinstall that top bolt of the bottle opener THROUGH that piece of the tailgate, to hold it into place. Actually a little surprised Ford didn't think to do that with these.

Genius. I will do this. Even without the bottle opener tie down, I can reuse the screw.

My ancient knees will not tolerate crawling around on a hard bed liner so I opted for a Rough Country rubber mat instead. I purchased just the tailgate part of the liner as it protects the finish when hauling 8ft. yard timbers in the half way down position. The bed mat is great in keeping everything in place and nothing slides around even on curves.
