Body shops aren't usually trawling eBay/scrapyards to buy your parts especially on insurance's dime/warrantied work. They're sourcing them through LKQ or OEM.
I know, just thought it is interesting. I think after a car is three years old the can use used parts.

I bought my First (1985) Ranger back from my Insurance company... Twice!! (1992 & 1999)
The 2nd time I just ran it until the end... 😭

This is just before it got retired, in 2001.. (Wish I had more of those "Area 51" stickers... From the 'X-Files" merch.)

The original Area 51 paint job lol

To the OP:

Sadly, this is the price for new vehicle parts due to availability and the LED headlights most of us enjoy so much now days. $3k doesn't seem like a bad price considering labor. Is Insurance covering it? If so, I'd just let a shop handle it. Even with a secondary vehicle to drive while I would wait on parts and pull everything apart, the painting and chances I'd need another part or a bunch of clips etc etc are high and my swear jar is already full from just regular maintenance :ROFLMAO:

I guess what I'm trying to say is the profit from a DIY job just wouldn't be worth it to me here. A shop could get it done in a week vs. me having to pull everything apart, wait on shipping, wait on a paint appointment, wait on my schedule, and then finally be able to install it. I'd rather just have my Insurance company cover a rental in the mean short period a shop would have it - assuming you have that on your insurance and if you don't; I bet you will after this lol.

Buy the parts yourself and then take them to the dealer for install and only pay labor. Every single part listed on that bill can be had for at least 30% off the retail price.

Driver side headlight for $800 from a legit site:
https://www.fordpartspros.com/oem-parts/ford-composite-assembly-nz6z13008c
Look up every single part in that list either here or on google and you will find it cheaper. Don't get suckered by the dealer. Most of the Ford parts websites are actual dealerships, even if they do not have the same name. Shop around different ones and you may find one that charges no sales tax.

Edit: FordPartsPros is Bommarito Ford in Hazelwood, MO.

Except those MSRP prices are usually offset by the agreed labor rate being substantially lower. So as estimated that's probably $1500 in labor the insurance would pay, but Joe Schmoe off the street it'd be $3500 full shop rate.

That hasn't been my experience at most dealership service departments. For example, I had an FPP exhaust put in my Explorer. Got it for cheap, dealer didn't hose me even though I didn't buy from them. I realize maintenance is different than repairs but I just did the same with an oil change in my Bronco. I supplied the oil, they knocked the price down - $34 for "The Works" in North Texas. Same service is $127 at my dealership in NY and they won't let me supply my own oil so I will be taking my Explorer to a different dealer when I return. Sometimes you gotta shop around.

6 hours of repair time on the left fender… yikes

Sorry to hear about this. Hope it gets fixed as good as new. I guess repairs are getting more expensive like everything else…. It is crazy

This isn't a service department, though, it's a bodyshop estimate at insurance negotiated prevailing rates. They might only be payable at $55/hr mechanical and nearly double that for paint-hours. Now if a service department is $150/hr do you think a body shop is really only $55? No, they're making up the difference in the margin for parts that they're actually getting for 50-70%.

Actually surprised they aren't just replacing it. But I guess 6 hours labor is slightly cheaper than 1.7 hr and ~$310 to replace.

Ahh, I didn't realize that. Thought that was a quote from a dealership for some reason and OP was paying out of pocket. Makes sense now.

And that's just the base XL headlight that costs $1300! Lord knows what the upgraded Lariat headlight with the LED daytime running light costs! Such a shame. More the reason I get paranoid driving my Maverick sometimes. Heaven for bid it gets in a fender bender, it would be deemed totaled because of the lack of parts and availability.

Good point. Insurance it doing it though. I have heard people say buy the part and have it installed. I know they make money on the parts. I've heard it said that is like buying your own meat and taking to a steak house to be cooked.
