For me, I ultimately decided to go tonneau cover. The ability to haul larger-than-bedsize objects, without having to remove a cap, was of greater value to me than increased dry storage volume.

I'm also lukewarm on the looks of a cap and really only like the cab-height size, which are pretty small. They're generally investment grade products at around $3000, which makes the price-to-volume ratio pretty unfavorable to me.

I managed to find a deal on a BAK Revolver X4S and Elevate TS rails through a forum member. I plan to pair those with a set of DIY 80/20 bedbars and platform for those times I need additional capacity.

I'm still waiting on the shipment of my Maverick, so I don't actually have any real world input.

Thanks...I got a price for BAK z4s with installation for about 1245.00. Better than Ford.
Dealer said pretty water tight.

I love our ARE MX topper. Cost $4000 but it makes the truck work for our dogs and other needs. Windoor on the side makes it easy to reach everything without crawling in.

It's true that I can't remove my ARE MX ($3200) by myself. I'll need to ask a strong friend or neighbor. I'll miss some of those open air features. Maybe I'll need to rent a trailer once in a while, or a bigger truck. It's also true that the cap has been a dream for camping, where the tonneau would be more limited. Going to the dump/recycling center has been easy with the cap as well.

This sucker has nearly 3x the cargo space as my old Forester, which was no slouch for space. I was pricing out really nice tonneau + elevated rack systems over $2500 and I would need to install and integrate it all myself. I really liked those options as well, but the cap was not much more in the long haul.

Well the tonneau cover cost me about a hundred bucks after using FordPass points. A cap is thousands of dollars.

These are not equivalent things.
FordPass points are irrelevant. I used mine on other stuff. $2500 for a high end tonneau + elevated rack system vs. $3000-$3500 for the cap with rack. Getting close to equivalent in both function and price.

I like the tonneau cover and prefer the roll up as they can be rolled up next to cab to haul taller objects. I opted for an inexpensive “TipTop” brand that I bought on Amazon $170 with free shipping. Looks pretty good, easy to install and doesn’t leak too bad. They all leak, I bought a Line-X trifold hard cover for the 21 Ranger I had before my Mav and the Line-X leaked all over. The TipTop leaks just at front and I think mostly because being a unibody there is no gap for water to run off front edge of bed.

Literally putting the cart before the horse and doesn't even have the vehicle yet. I wonder why the MTC guy was dumping it. Probably because it's a PITA to install and maintain and you're still left with a small covered bed and awkward rack system.

Not saying it's a bad option though. I definitely was set on a simular setup, but changed my mind at the end. Unless your getting a deal, the cap easily wins in price-to-volume ratio. Angry elephant racks alone are $1200 and the Retrax pro XR is $2300! That combo cost more than my cap.

HA yeah, I waited until I had some measure of confirmation that it was being built before starting to find deals on stuff. Member I bought it from bought a SC instead of waiting for his Mav - I'm ok waiting for mine, considering it's just awaiting shipment.

My DIY bars and platform will only run me about $300, using some other stuff I have here - it's not going to be nearly as elaborate as the rack systems you're talking about. Agreed if you're comparing those vs a cap, I'd probably go cap. What I have in mind is two 8" high crossbars (so the cover will roll underneath) and a 30"x45" platform which, if needed, could be unbolted as an assembly by removing 8 nuts. I can remove that myself easier than a cap and it's quite a bit easier to store.

Annoyingly, I've spent more time thinking about this than I care to admit and, in the end, if I find my strategy was way off base I'll try something else.

That's the cover I bought too. I just wanted a cheap one to cover the bed while I investigate tri fold hard covers or higher quality roll-ups.
