I bought my 22 Lariat Hybrid April 30 2022. It was fully optioned and the original buyer had backed out (his wife would not let him buy 2 pickups in 2 months) I paid 5K over for the privilege of "cutting to the head of the line". I feel I got a great deal because I did NOT have to wait and if I had ordered the next time the banks opened I would probably would still be waiting and the new price is only a few hundred less than I paid. I have gotten 11000 miles of use and economy out of it in the last year.

I just picked up my CG Hybrid XL last Thursday....LOVE IT!!!

For me.... My Maverick purchase came down to simple economics. I was driving a 2003 Hemi Ram 1500 on my 100-mile daily commute at 13MPG. Blowing $150 a week on gas for a 400-mile tank.

My Maverick will be about $60 per fill-up for a 550-600 mile tank.

The fuel economy alone will be saving me over $5K per year.

If i had known in October 2021 (when I first placed me order) that Ford was going to stretch out my order for 550+ days......then I would have GLADLY paid $5K-$7K ADM because simple math tells me that I would have recouped that extra $$ back very very quickly with fuel savings.

Not everyone who pays ADM is "stupid" or "ridiculous". For some, like me, who were getting BURIED at the pump with their gas-guzzler...... paying ADM could be wise vs. waiting FOREVER for Ford to complete their order.......

That EZ credit comes with a highly inflated interest rate. But people don't care about having a $1,000+ car payment anymore.
People are crazy, and I'd never pay over MSRP. The reason I'm buying a Maverick is because it's cheap. I'm putting a large amount as a down payment to keep that monthly payment down. Depending on how much time I have between now and delivery, I may be able to buy it outright.

The “why” is easy…they want it real bad and can afford it. It’s like asking a woman why she’d want a $300-$500 designer pocketbook. I wouldn’t pay 3-5K over MSRP, even though I want one and can afford it...it’s a matter of practicality and principle. I’ll wait for my base XL to be built.
Wow. Do you use similar examples for (let's generalize some more) guys buying high-end speakers and sound systems, gaming computers, headsets, gaming chairs, fancy grills, and collectibles of various ilk? No idea what a "designer pocketbook" (which gets sold already at a markup in store, by the way, just like every other luxury good, and marked up again in the secondary market based on interest - sound familiar?) has to do with the Mav, other than it's the only disparaging example you could come up with

Just curious the mentality and reasoning of these mark ups and who is actually paying them. I understand and totally aware of dealers asking several grand over MSRP on " abandoned " orders...

But seeing so many posts of folks that sold their trucks to carmax or carvana or just back to the Ford dealer etc... For 5-10 grand over MSRP in many cases, which means the buying dealer is going to mark it up additionally another few grand.... It just puzzles me, who is wanting one of these trucks that bad that they would pay what could be well over 10 grand over MSRP on one of these.

I feel like I have wanted one myself pretty bad, but I also really don't want one at a price point any higher than MSRP. I have multiple orders pending, a XLT trim level and a Lariat trim level... One is a little under 30 grand, the other is close to 35 grand. I don't see these trucks being worth any more than that. I understand that a new F150 or even Ranger is a ton more, but to me they are far more substantial vehicles ( and over priced at that ). But I can't wrap my head around paying over 30 grand for a used XL or over 40 grand for a used XLT. Even paying those prices for new ones someone else backed out on, I start to think of what other vehicles I could purchase for that same sum of money and it is a LONG list of far better vehicles.

But clearly there is a market for Mavericks at 5-10 grand over MSRP or else we wouldn't be seeing these high offers being given...

Following auctions on Cars and bids, seems like vehicles like the Riven trucks and lightnings, broncos etc... The market has softened and these trucks are rarely selling for over MSRP now. Heck, even the last few Mavericks sold there barely went for over MSRP.

IDK.... lot's of thoughts go through my head when I think of all this. I don't know what to think. I mean, are these trucks that special that people really think they are still a good buy at WAY over MSRP? Or is this just a sign of American excess, where some folks just simply want one bad enough that they will pay whatever they have to pay to get one? Or is it something else?

I've told this story several times. I was at the end-of-life of a 2011 Honda Pilot with 310k miles on it. Despite signing up, I missed the order windows both times. I could not wait for the next window. So my choices were being under the gun and getting forced into buying a car I didn't like, or getting exactly what I was hoping for by trolling the Ford inventory pages in a 200 mile radius for a couple of months. My gas savings is already eating into the 5k over that I paid, and as you can see from my former car, I keep my vehicles for a long time. This (cyber orange) truck fits every need I had relative to mileage, size, towing, cargo and versatility, and it makes me happy. I did walk away from (and review) a local dealership who was marking up 15k - for me that percentage markup on an entry-level-priced truck was obscene. Would I have preferred to pay MSRP or even below? Of course I would - no one who's choosing to pay the premium is thrilled to pay more money. But I understand the free market and this truck continues to be relatively hard to find....so the upcharge was worth it and fortunately, still in my overall price range.

Sorry, not meant to be disparaging. The only parallels between a “market adjusted” Maverick and a designer pocketbook is that whoever buys it, they want it badly and can afford it.

I wouldn't. But you could probably justify it if you think msrp will keep increasing. For ex, my22 xl was 20k. Add on 5k. You're only 2.5k above my23 and probably 0k above my24.
You left off the $1,495.00 shipping on the 2022 XL. The base XL is now $22,595.00 plus $1,595.00 shipping for a total of $24,190.00.

I paid $5k over for my 2023 XLT hybrid. I have an XL hybrid on order from 9/15 but have no idea if it will be built. Three months ago, my wife’s car broke down and it was a transmission issue. They couldn’t even get parts for it so we sold it. We’ve been sharing a car for three months that gets 20-23mpg. I also have been using it for work. Almost 3,000 miles per month. The fuel savings, reducing miles on our other car, and not having to share a vehicle was the reason I paid over MSRP for my Maverick. I considered a Corolla hybrid, but I wouldn’t have been happy. The Santa Cruz doesn’t get great mileage like a hybrid. I would have preferred to wait, but life circumstances changed the priority of a vehicle. Each person's situation is different and you can’t say everyone just paid over sticker because of the “gotta have it now” mentality. With prices likely going up next year, $5k won’t look so bad.

Decided I wanted A Hybrid Sept. 10, 2022.

I drove one home; three days later on Sept. 13, 2022 in exact color and trim I wanted except it came with CP360 and I probably would have ordered without. Say la vi. But I got more for paying for it.

3 days of "waiting".

Negotiated to $3k over 2022 MSRP.
Got 2022 finance rates:
Choice of 1.9%/3 2.9%/4 3.9%/5

So right place, right time, right price.

Did I mention NO WAITING and I've used it for one vacation, some towing, and several home improvement projects in the past 6 months. I got a good deal.

All I can say is if you compare the maverick to anything else in the marketplace currently even the “extra” people are paying is still a lot less than many other vehicles.
Yeah, average new vehicle cost is $38k 😱 (my wife's XLT hybrid was $29,400 my unbuilt XL hybrid is $26,500)

I agree..... and yet, compared to the cost of a Ridgeline, we are back to "What the buyer is willing to pay". I am pretty "thrifty" and never ever bought a new vehicle until now. A hybrid truck essentially the same size as my Tacoma but it gets 45mpg and is the cheapest vehicle in the country? Where do I sign? So I signed. Even waiting 19 months and even paying $27K for the XLT (just to get cruise control) I am still glad I did. The bed is 6" shorted than the Taco but the inside is roomier and it's easier to get in and out of. Like you, I would not pay more than MSRP either (even it the dealer hoped I might). If you have been living under a rock for two years and suddenly realize there is a sensibly-sized truck that gets 45mpg and price is no object.... Go figure.

I see Carvana selling these used suckers for $35K plus and it's tempting.

There's no need to order an XLT to get cruise anymore. Cruise is standard on all Mavericks.

People are going are going to buy what they want and rationalize it to make them feel better about it. No big deal, people just being people.

It's a waste of money but some want it bad enough to pay it. Trust me, nobody is going to die if they don't get a Maverick. There are plenty of vehicles without a mark up. They want it and want it now. That's really all there is to it.

There are other hybrid trucks available without a markup right now? Please show me where. Why would anyone by a car they don’t want to drive unless it’s a teenager getting their first car or someone who can only afford a beater?

Laugh all you want but there are Santa Cruz's by me going for a few grand off sticker. I am in the Chicagoland area. I went to look because my car got totaled. Special financing at 3.9% and 1-3 grand off sticker. Trust me, I got phone calls for 2 weeks to come back and lets make a deal. Plenty of other commodity vehicles are going for under sticker. Unless you are totally locked in on the Maverick, there are other options.
