I had a minor accident last year, Rear-end collision. After more than 4 months of waiting for parts, my car was declared a total loss.
The left frame rail was slightly bent in the crumple zone. Ford does not allow pulling or welding of this part. only replace. But replacement costs more than $26 000.
Insurance gives me 2 options, pay me 40k to buy a new car or pay me 25k and I will keep my car as salvage. I decided to take a risk and keep the car. Pulling this rail cost around 2k-3k. So I plan to fix and make a rebuilt title. My car has 6k miles. It is still new...
Damage on my Maverick in the attached picture. Watch your back! Easy to get a total loss.

P.S. I found many mavericks with a similar problem on Copart. This one is an example:
First edition.

Just remember that the salvage voids the factory warrantee
Yes. I know. I take the risk. But they will do recalls as long as the car is drivable.
I got a little less money than I paid for my Maverick. Maybe I will add more and buy a new AWD hybrid in the future. I like the size of the Maverick.

tough situation but it sounds like you basically got your Maverick for a few grand.
personally I would fix the taillight and drive it with a smile.

You a right. Many cars on the road have scratches outside and bent crumple zone inside, if it does not affect the geometry of the whole frame it is fine. Just the next accident in the same spot will be harder for the car and driver. The light is already fixed. I am driving the car as a salvage. So insurance removes comprehension and collision from coverage, but after I make a rebuilt title they will return coverage back. I decided to pay for the original as lol as bodyshop bought this part. Also, I paid for the assembly. Insurance paid for the disassembly.

So basically liability only insurance. Will they still cover medical?

I think personally I would have taken the 40 Grand and then tried to purchase the truck from the salvage yard...

It will be fun to watch your rebuild journey.

Sounds like the right decision. Had a Sports Car with similar situation but Insurance company would not commit to selling it back to me. Not losing sleep over it but there are at least 1/2 dozen Mavericks on this site with minimal rear-end damage (that you had to look hard to see it) that were totaled. Subframe structural damage.

The lack of a frame and thin sheet metal is a price you pay for a low price truck... You can push the Maverick's thin body panels almost anywhere with your finger and see the thin sheet metal. My little Porsche to the Left is in the same boat...a 20 mph rear end collision would probably total it... unibody/ belly pan frame sub -structure...really hard after crumple zone are squeeze in.

It varies by state, but in my state a vehicle that is deemed "totaled" (by an insurance company) can not be put back on the road until inspected repairs are approved.

Buying used car it is always lottery. Only car I will buy it is first edition ( like in my link). I know my car I know how I used it. I know how light is damage. So my car is not lottery.

No, they did nothing to body. The only damage in attached picture.

What happens if you get hit again with a salvage title, do you get paid again?

If salvage - not. Car is not covered now. Rebuilt title - yes, but it will not be another 40k. My car cost now around 12k. I am still waiting for docs and salvage title.
