Hey all if I get the Maverick any time soon I'll need to have my Ranger ready to sell. It's an 08 4x4 and there is what appears to be oil of some sort on the front axles. Problem is I don't know where it's coming from and I'm no expert on this. Nothing drips down on the garage pad, and so far as I can tell the transmission, engine oil, and front differential fluid levels are all without loss over time.

It's been like this for awhile yet I cannot tell if it's old or new. I suspect new though and if it is where could it be coming from?

If you can get some pictures or video of it we can probably diagnose it. Diff oil can travel a long way since its so thick. Same with axle grease. Could be drip from PS or engine oil. Most likely not a big deal at all without and drops on the ground. Some things also only leak when warm and moving also.

If you think it is some oil of some sort then first try to identify the oil or fluid. Perhaps you can wipe it with a napkin or cloth. Then you can target the area where it might be coming from. Could be transmission axle seals on the input side of the diff housing or leaking CV boots. :giggle:

Well you could put your phone or camera on the ground and roll over it with a video recording. Maybe a bright light too.

To me it is coming from the boot of the "cv"(?) joint in the second pic?

I would bet on axle seals. Real easy to replace once you have the knuckes and shafts out. I would probably buy a set of tie rod ends, maybe balljoints, and the seals. Should be all ya need. And will take a novice the bulk of a day.
