Hi all — learned yesterday that someone had backed into our beloved ‘23 Maverick XL Hybrid in a hit and run. No notes or witnesses. It sucks.

I’ve attached photos of the damage, which includes a dented bed panel, the slightly detached bumper, and crucially, a bent bracket on the interior of the bumper.

I’m particularly worried about the crushed bracket, although I know the panel and perhaps the bumper may have to be replaced.

Concerning the bracket, It appears to be a distinct member that was welded onto the frame — can anyone comment on that?

My main concern is avoiding frame damage and a total loss (as determined by insurance — it drives totally fine) , as we love the hell out this truck and can’t wait to see our young boys grow up with it (and helping me move stuff in it!). I did purchase at MSRP (out the door at 26,400, all included) so that helps, but still. Gutted.

It's really hard to say just from the pics. But I think you have a good chance of NOT being totaled! 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

No way that is totaled. I was just in an accident with my wife's Highlander. All four doors, hood, front bumper, both B posts, both front quarter panels and one rear quarter panel need replaced. Insurance wanted to repair it. Only decided to total it after the repair shop told them it would be at least 4 months just to get parts.

Thanks for the input, guys! It’s still totally drivable so I don’t mind waiting for parts, so long as insurance doesn’t get spooked by the bent bracket

That’s what most reputable insurance is doing now. I know a guy had a maverick similar as OP damage and after a month they totaled it.
Cheap insurance will let it sit and owner makes payments on a car they can’t drive plus cost of replacement/ loaner vehicles.
Not fords fault. Thank our world parts shortage

I think you're good. It appears the bent bracket was just for rear truck fender support...not really crash protection related. But...parts being what they are...you may have to wait until 2055.

Ive seen some with less damage on Copart totaled but I think as it has been mentioned here - if you are clear that you are ok to wait for parts that damage is no where near the $$ amount it would take to actually exceed the cost vs truck value that would require them to total it. Heres one coming up for auction that was totaled with 2700 miles.

Think that’s still a concern if the vehicle is drivable? I don’t mind using it as is and waiting a few months to get it fixed properly

Nope. Not totaled, but might be a long wait for parts.

That’s really helpful, thanks! Our damage definitely appears to be less than this one, and I’ll make sure to communicate that I’m cool driving it until parts become available. I love this truck and it’d break our hearts to lose it

Been searching IAAI for one that is pretty good and found nothing. I'll have to look at Copart. Just checked and that looks like it was a wreck that was partially finished but lines don't line up. Inside driver knee airbag looks blown

Hi! I actually work as an insurance auto claims adjuster (I know, I'm a horrible unethical person).

Most states have a total loss threshold, some states have that threshold sitting at 75%. This means if the cost of repairs or total cost of the claim exceeds 75% of the market value of your truck, the insurance company will likely total it out.

Another factor that people have already pointed out is timeline. This is a vehicle that Ford is struggling to get off the assembly line to consumers. Parts for these trucks are likely even harder to come by.

Best case scenario, whichever body shop you work with is able to do the repairs for $2k-4k and is able to get parts in a matter of weeks.

Honestly you can PDR that to almost perfection and purchase the fender support bracket and replace it yourself.

I would personally go this route because otherwise your Mav will have an accident listed on it and will lower the value of it. I would at least get an idea of what it would cost to have someone PDR it.

Ask me how I know (self inflicted wound identical to what you see below - fixed by Chris and Dave from Dentless Touch.)

Mine was significantly worse than the video and came out exactly the same, actually better as I didn't dent the pinch weld Dave references. Check out their youtube page and all the crazy videos they do. Yes - I drove from Columbus, OH to Chicago to have it done.

Thanks for jumping in here! I’m an attorney, so I’m definitely not casting any stones. We all have jobs to do — including folks that put a number on insurance claims!

Having said that, I’d love to pick your brain for a second. You hit on some points that laypersons don’t necessarily understand (and I didn’t, until this morning): (1) totaling a vehicle is a multi factor decision, and (2) a few of those factors are currently weighing against the new Mavs.

I’ve popped by three body shops to start the process (along with working with our insurance co), and got a first unnoticeable quote of 5-6k, the next one “above 3”, and another that felt it was fixable, but didn’t want to talk numbers until I provided the insurance quote.

I do live in California, where apparently we use a total loss formula — would you say that helps or hurts our likelihood of avoiding a total loss?

And further, as the vehicle drives fine (no loose parts, no frame issues I can feel or that were noticed by the above shops, etc), do you think the “waiting for parts” factor might be less salient here, given the fact that I don’t need a rental?

Lastly, anything else you’d recommend I do at this stage? As I mentioned, I’ve started my claim and asked a few body shops to weigh in on the current state of the damage. For whatever it’s worse, none of them thought it was in total loss territory at all, but as an lawyer I’m trained to look into this stuff!

And seriously, thanks *so* much for chiming in! Been a tough couple days. We worked really hard for this truck and I’ve got a couple young boys that already love it (and helping their dad do work with it!)
