After scouring the interweb for weeks, I couldn't find a wheel that remotely tickled my fancy. Too many spokes. too many extra nooks and crannies. Bolt/allen heads for no reason. There were a few upwards of $400 a wheel that were just... ok. I knew I didn't want to completely black the truck out, bronze wasn't doing it for me, and the stock silver was just too bright and just... awkward against the shadow black. Had my local powder coater spray my steelies "matte yellow olive", moved the clips to inner weights, switched to black lugs (gorilla brand from ebay) and black center caps (from amazon). All in all, I'm loving it. The caps fit perfect on the rear, but needed a bit of filing to fit the front for some reason. I like the contrast of gloss/matte, and once the rest of my plans for customizing the truck come together it should be cohesive.

Future plans:
-light smoke head/tail lights and front markers
-lasfit led swap front markers and tail lights
-ranch topper in black - 4" rise - retro brown/orange stripe decal on the topper
-MAYBE a 2"front 3"rear drop
-BFG trail terrains once I burn thru the stock tires

My dog Clementine approves.

I’ve had the pale yellow steel wheel with a black color Maverick on my mind since the first time I saw a black xlt. Good to see someone else thinking same. I would just like to do that and have some tabs welded to the wheel to allow baby moon polished stainless steel hubcaps to snap over the center and cove the lug nuts. I see that combo with baby moons on 32 ford street rods etc. I love it.

That's kind of what I had in mind, but was wanting to be a little more 70s by possibly using stripe decals in shades of brown/orange. No need to weld tabs - theres a forum member that used chrome police interceptor center caps from either the explorer or taurus, they look almost the same from a distance. I'll try to find a pic.

Police interceptor center caps on stock steelies - looking pretty similar to baby moons

@bringbackthe70s Do you have the link to this original post or the User Name of the owner? I'd like to ask them where they purchased these center caps as my Internet searches have left more questions than answers. If anyone else knows, please feel free to chime in! Thanks.

I'm assuming you took all 4 wheels off to do this? did you just leave your mav on jack stands or something?

Yes all four wheels and tires needed to come off and the stock silver paint needed to be chemically stripped to bare metal before powder coating.

Yes you would have to take the wheels off the car for powder coating then rebalancing. Jackstands are cheap, if you can't get 2 pair just do one side at a time...

That’s definitely a choice... but I’m happy if you’re happy!
