We just got delivery of our Hybrid Area 51, and are delighted.

We want to get two kennels for our Labs. The Intermediate size kennels (Gunner G1) are each 23 inches wide, so two of them side by side would be 46 inches, which is greater than the narrowest (wheel well) width of the Maverick (42 inches).

The folks at Gunner suggested we buy and install a simple pallet system as per the photo below -- it would presumably allow the kennels to rise above the wheel well constriction.

My question is whether any of y'all have tried this and, given the particular configuration of the Maverick, whether it would work. Thanks in advance!

I don't see why it wouldn't work.

If you're going to keep that setup in there long term, a plastic palette system would make the most sense, since it's moisture/rot proof.

If it's a one-off, or occasional thing, I would recommend a 1/2" sheet of plywood, 36" x 48" in size., and let it rest on top of the wheel wells and a couple 2x members. Hold it all down with the ratchet straps.

Dallas, thanks! One further question: each kennel weighs 57 lbs, and each dog weighs about 62 lbs. Thus, weight on the plywood would be about 240 lbs. I've no idea how much the sheet of plywood will support. Ideas?

I'm not sure, but I think you'll be ok.

The floors of the kennels are solid and help distribute the weight.

Subflooring in a house is usually 3/4", so if you wanted to increase the size you can.

Thanks again. And, just to be sure, the lengths of the 2 2-by-4’s are 44 inches in 54 inches, right?

As y’all can see, this is our first pick up truck! :)

Good to go but the kennels might act like wind tunnels at higher speeds. I'd be careful and keep an eye on them during your trip.

Here's a quick side profile of what it could look like too. Thankfully, the kennels are lower than the roof of the truck.

Measure Twice, cut once....

I would measure that one yourself. Fit and finish may vary some from truck to truck.

Looks like a good setup.

I run an Impact crate in my Jeep for Ella. It's a 40" side door. Plan on getting a collapsible for the Maverick. I'll be interested to see your setup when done.

Most of the time, yes. But they can get VERY wet and muddy…
This is why I bought a Maverick! My lab will mostly ride in the cab (esp in the summer), but he gets very muddy, and when he's filthy, he will go in the crate in the bed until he can get home and get a bath.

I'm just putting a single crate in the bed, but it's going to be on an elevated platform with drawers to hold some gear, and it will also be able to hold a second crate when the time comes.

I went with a Ruffland crate vs Gunner, but the Gunners are absolutely fantastic too. I think your plan is solid.

I wanted to put in two large gunner kennels, however they were too large for the Maverick. The medium size kennels are too small for my two dogs so instead I bought this crate and strapped it in and it’s pretty secure. I like this method just as much as the two gunner kennels and waaaay cheaper. The cage cost around $300.

Is this just a thread for @Dallas Maverick to show of these gorgeous sketches? Damn these are nice.
Ha ha. Thanks man. Beautiful aren't they?

I appreciate it, but I can't claim full credit. I'm just pulling data from all over and organizing it in a way that makes sense.

The kennel sketch is straight from their website.
https://gunner.com/products/g1-kennel

and the truck is from an infrographic distributed by Ford.
https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/maverick-flexbed-features-specs.174/

I just drew over the top of them.
