Got a Call to Remove Full Size Spare Tire from XLT Order

We got a call from our dealer salesman today, saying he’d been contacted by Ford to suggest our Maverick XLT EcoBoost order (1/25/2022) would be produced more quickly if we removed the Full Size Spare Tire from the order.

Of course, we did — easy enough to buy a full-size wheel and tire after we get the truck. (Whenever that might be …)

We ordered a pretty bare-bones truck — only went with the XLT because we wanted cruise control. (Only other add-on option is a trailer hitch receiver. But did not order the 4k tow package.)

Anyway — we were surprised that a full-sized spare is being considered a “constraint.” Or did I miss seeing on the list of constraints that went out recently?

When you go to buy the full size tire, please review the comments on this site as the "full size tire" is NOT the same as the tires that come on the Maverick you order. It is smaller, and there is question whether a "regular" full size tire would be able to fit in the space allotted under the truck. Just a word of caution for you to check this out. Good luck!

Of course, why should a "full-size" spare be the same as the other four tires on the car, as in the olden days? Thanks for the heads up — I wasn't aware.

I was wondering why on earth ordering the "full-size spare" option would hold up production of the car. To my simple mind, it would just be a matter of throwing a fifth wheel/tire in the spare-tire place instead of the temporary.

But, of course not that simple. ... Does this mean, then, that the wheel/tire you get with the "full-size spare" option is ALSO to be considered just a temporary? Since it would be, if not matching in size to the others on the car?

Full-size spare does not mean identical spare. Just that it's not a tiny temp spare. This isn't a new concept, either.

They also generally come on steel wheels, not whatever expensive aluminum alloy wheel you have, nor do they typically get TPMS sensors.

It's not as simple as taking a 5th identical wheel and throwing it under the bed.

Not really sure about all of this, and maybe you should search this site for more accurate information. But, my understanding is the Ecoboost Maverick comes with a "doughnut" type spare. What we thought was an actual 5th tire and wheel is not the same as the other four wheels and tires.

I believe it is in between the two sizes and allows you to drive farther and at a higher rate of speed than what a doughnut would allow. Some people have commented that they were expecting to be able to use the "full size spare tire" in their normal rotation of tires, but obviously, one can't. Please research before buying anything to make sure it will fit underneath the truck. There may even be comments on that as well.

It's been too long since I learned about this and haven't paid attention to it anymore.

No worries, we're not all experts on these things.

Sometimes a full-size spare is the same exact tire as the primary wheels, but still comes equipped on a steel wheel without TPMS sensor, so it's the same size and everything but still meant for temporary use. An example would be Bronco Sport Big Bend with the standard wheels and tow package - there, you get the same exact ContiProContact 225/65R17 tire, but on a steel wheel with no tire pressure reading.

Or, Big Bronco gets an identical spare, same tire, same aluminum alloy wheel, TPMS sensor, and works perfectly for a 5-wheel tire rotation scheme.

In the case of Maverick, though, it seems that neither of those is the case. I haven't yet seen exactly what size and model tire they're including as a full-size spare there.

My Lariat with Lux came with a donut, despite the initial order guide saying I would get a full-size spare. Then they dropped that from the order guide. Then I found out the full-size spare is not actually a full-size spare.

Just needless B.S. so they could save a few bucks.

Thanks for the heads up on this new constraint. Just called my dealership to see if I can get it removed. I’m on my third build date for the month. Just waiting for the late Friday email informing me of another delay. There’s only one thing left for me to delete: the tow hitch receiver. But I’ll delete that, too, if necessary. Criminy!
