Hi,

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

So, after a very long wait, I finally got my 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid. This is my first time owning a Hybrid vehicle.

I have the user manual and intend to go through it page by page. In the meantime, I wanted to ask if someone has a “how to” or a guide so I can follow those to make sure that I’m driving my new vehicle correctly. Also, wanted to know if there’s any common defects to look for. I love cars, but I’m not mechanically inclined and have to rely on mechanics.

When driving, I have noticed that it has a big “roar” — much more than compared to a Honda Accord. The roar comes on every time I hit the gas. Is that normal?

Also, when it is slow, I hear a “whine” — like it’s coming from the Hybrid battery. It’s not there all the time, but notice it more when I use the eco mode.

Any information will be much appreciated.

I’ve had my hybrid for about a month. The ICE is a bit loud(roar)and the regenerative braking is the whine. Sounds like your Mav is doing just fine!

Also USA hybrids and electric vehicles have a noise maker that you hear in reverse and low forward speeds. This is so visually handicapped people can hear you coming and backing up. In Europe you can turn it off but not here.

Having owned a few Hybrids the best advice I can give you is to just drive it like normal. Let the car/computer do all the work. If you're a reasonable driver and not mashing the pedal to the floor all the time you should get great mpg's. Can you maximize those mpg's? sure, but many people get all stressed and worried about maximizing it. I say just don't think about it, drive and enjoy the truck, its a great one!

And to answer your questions, the whine is completely normal. You'll also hear the truck make clicks and noises while it is turned off and just parked, don't worry about it, its also completely normal.

Thank you for your helpful reply. BTW, I also got an Oxford White.

Thank you for your reply. I am enjoying driving this pickup. It rides comfortably like a car. As a new owner, I get nervous about these sounds, but your reply along with others was reassuring. 🙂

When driving, I have noticed that it has a big “roar” — much more than compared to a Honda Accord. The roar comes on every time I hit the gas. Is that normal? Search and read about all the defects mentioned on this forum.

Also, when it is slow, I hear a “whine” — like it’s coming from the Hybrid battery. It’s not there all the time, but notice it more when I use the eco mode.

If this is your first hybrid you can drive it like any normal car but your gas mileage will be less. It is a truck not a passenger car that is usually made to have a quiet motor and cabin so you will hear more noise. For defects, search words like, soft plastic, lumbar, remote start, tailgate, eye glass holder, dead battery, screen, rear camera to name just a few.

Look at some resent posts about gas mileage. Learn what the gage on the left is telling you. Try the different modes. You want power choose sport mode, you want economy choose eco mode and don't stomp on the gas pedal. Every car sounds different, lean what the Maveric sounds like consistently for the first 2 weeks then ask if any thing turns up sounding differently. The gas engine can roar or just purr. You control that. Set the center screen between the two gages and it will tell you charging-electric-hybrid if you set it to show you.

Learn by experimenting with your display. Try different things to get aquainted. It will help you.

I second this. First hybrid, only had it for 5 days and what you're hearing is my experience as well. @Clarkdonbran speaks the truth.
@Hybrid2021 Look through the display setting to get you to the screen where it's telling you whether you are charging, using electric, or hybrid more, that has helped me with little tricks like feathering the the throttle a little before it jumps out of electric into engine mode. I've been able to go as fast as 55mph in electric only on a flat road with no inclines, after I have accelerated up to speed. Good luck and enjoy!! Welcome to the board!

I did play around with the display settings, but didn’t come across what you’re referring t. Or maybe I did, but didn’t understand what I was looking at. 😁

If you get a chance, can you please tell me how to navigate to that display setting? Also, no matter how I lightly I touch the gas pedal, it starts roaring within a few seconds (after initially starting up on electric).

Here you go bud. Pg 117 and 119 of Owners Manual. You need to get to the EV Coach screen which will tell you what your right foot is doing to trigger Electric, Battery regeneration, or Hybrid mode. Your gas input and braking will directly affect your hybrid driving proficiency. :)
With regard to your engine starting when you press the gas pedal even lightly; there are a lot of variables; is it cold outside (the truck needs to heat up stuff for normal operating), are you on an incline, are you at a stop (unless your're in a residential street speed, and its flat, its not uncommon for the engine to kick in). But just get to the EV Coach screen, and you'll begin to see what it does and when. Give it a shot. Report back to us on your prorgress. :)
Hope this helped!!

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. This is very helpful. I’m going out for a drive shortly and will report back what I find.

I was able to locate the EV coach using this manual, although the screen navigation was slightly different. Not sure if it is because my pickup is an XL or if it requires a software update.

The EV coach was very helpful and I understand better when the engine switches to ICE or Electric. Using the EV coach, I was even able to push 40 mph and still stay on Electric.

I also checked out some youtube reviews for Maverick Hybrid and looks like that “roar” is quite common — as suggested by others who responded to my post. That definitely lowered my anxiety. I will say that the roar does sound a bit synthetic — perhaps meant to be an audio signal to the driver that ICE has kicked in. I’ll eventually tune it out.

This is such a terrific and friendly forum. I sincerely appreciate how everyone took the time to help me out. Good luck to all.

Absolutely amigo. Glad it was of value for you and you can now enjoy your truck more and learn the hybrid nuances, as I do too. My Experience/Tip: Decent acceleration on electric ONLY from a stoplight is a tough one, as it commonly kicks the ICE in. But I do have good success getting into electric only once I am up to speed. Have fun!!!
