There's no plastic 2 X 4's available in my area as mentioned here https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...-flexbed-installed-length-54-1-4-inches.3412/

I'm thinking of cutting the 2 X 4's to size, then painting them with spray-in bed liner (says it adheres to wood), and fitting them with pipe insulation as mentioned in the post above. Thoughts, anyone tried this or doing something similar?

This the Herculiner spray, available through Amazon or Wal-mart

I sprayed a trailer deck with it and it peeled.

I think you would be better off wrapping it in marine grade carpet like a boat trailer as someone else in that same thread posted. You wouldn't need the pipe insulation at that point either.

I hadn't read that. Good idea- I can customize the color and it's probably softer on the hands. Thanks!

This is non-intuitive but most of these bed liners aren't water proof so when applying to wood (and metal) need to be painted before you apply and it will work really well. Just give the paint a good amount of time to dry and cure. If you use spray paint apply a few coats then give it like 2 weeks to fully cure and then apply the bed-liner and it should be tough as nails.
