I'd worry about keeping anything of value in there, but I keep a small brush (no tonneau yet, gotta sweep up still) in the bottom and a bag of ropes for tying stuff down in the top.
There are kits to add a key lock. (I don't have one since a. I have a tonneau and b. all I store there is an elastic tie down web.) Eventually I'll probably get a second cubby for the driver's side and will out a fire extinguisher in it.

I was storing ratchet straps In there, they got wet and all stiff and nasty.
They couldn’t dry out.
I got new tie down straps, they are under my back seat and dry.
The cubby is no longer used, useless to me.

I keep my ratchet straps in the bed cubby, put them in ziplock bags so moisture is not an issue.

Congratulations. It takes a lot to make me feel stupid, but you just succeeded. 😭
