So I had a 24 Hybrid with zero issues. Sold it to a family member to get my 25 AWD Hybrid and this one has a noticeable "siren" noise when the ice kicks on probably 80 percent of the time.

Only thing I could find online was this on Reddit. My 24 never did this.

Anyone else, its annoying as all get out.

Makes it. Doesn’t bother me. My model 3 made similar whirring noises. Not sure how that little whine is worse than any other engine noise that would be produced.

maybe trade your family member for the 2024…

Driven multiple hybrids over the years that never did this.

The mandated below 15 mph safety thing is annoying enough compared the older hybrids that were nice and silet but I'm ok with it. Will be hard to diagnose early wheel bearing issues, but I understand what its for.

An very high pitch ear piercing random whine is frustrating. If the 25's do it I wonder if it has to do with any changes?

The HF55 is a brand new transaxle with all new more powerful electric motors.

The whine is barely perceptible to me, faint, and is washed out by the 20mph or less hybrid noise or the radio on anything above 4 or 5

Yea I wonder if the new HF55 has anything to do with it. Yes, if the radio is on it does drown it out, or windows down.

I think a distant siren is the best way to describe it.

It’s known as coil whine, or electromagnetically induced noise, and happens when energy flowing through the motors. It’s totally normal even if it may be annoying.

Since it occurs when ICE kicks on it may be the generator motor pushing current through it.

I had the same initial perception: sounds like a distant emergency vehicle siren. There’s one other noise that occurs when it’s shut off that sounds like a really staticky muffled push to talk radio transmission.

Anyways, like you, I found them annoying at first. But even without the radio on I’ve either stopped noticing or caring. New tires that are slightly noisier may have minimized my perception as well.

don’t worry about it!

A video with sound would be so helpful here. What some call a whine, others may call a nag.

The night we drove the new "25 AWD Hybrid home, I was constantly hearing a very pronounced siren-esque noise as we gently accelerated. Now, 400+ miles later, it is much less noticeable ... Cal, would this be consistent with your explanation?

I think so. I believe it’s still as pronounced on mine after 4k miles.

It’s 1 of 2 things. Either the drive motor discharging energy when ice takes over or the motor generator making noise with the ice engine providing power to it.

My completely uneducated guess is that it is the motor generator making the noise as it starts to generate electricity with the ICE engine operating.

What I can tell you is the generator will make noise when generating and it won't while freewheeling. And the loudness changes with load, and it can be doing either at anytime so you won't necessarily observe a pattern without a scanner device.

Can you 25's with a nice stretch of flat road attempt an EV only acceleration past 20 so no EV alert noise? I guess make sure the battery is loaded to support that.

With EV only, and faster speeds - the generator motor is spinning to offset the traction motor, so the engine doesn't spin.
I guess not exactly a hard load, like spinning for the gearing while ICE is running.
And not as fast as it could go either, but at least quiet.

Might tell you if it's one of the motors at least.
