Just installed my Flated Air Topper by @FLATED Guy. Pretty easy install. Because it was my first time, bad back and all, took about an hou. Of course I put a couple of things in backwards (first timer syndrome). I think it looks pretty good! Very sturdy! Just need to put the windows in, should be easy peasy.

What do you guys think?

I have the low one, and love it. I use it to haul my daughter back and forth to college. I kind of wish I paid a bit more for the taller one, but I like the looks of the small one better.

interesting. so. how secure do you think these things are? can anyone with a pen knife come by and slash it and there goes your $1,000?
Anyone can come and slash your tire and key your car too. Do you always live in fear?

Yours looks great. I just wanted one I could camp in. I’m looking for something I can use to cover the tailgate when it’s down. the Dac tent is too expensive at $200. Looking for a hack at under $100.

yes, they could, but a big inflatable top seems like an easier target. Thanks for answering my question though, oh wait, you didn’t.

I didn’t know that this product existed, so my first question, was, ā€œcan it be cut open?ā€. Thieves looking to score some extra loot make up a much larger subset of criminals than vandals do. So for me, cutting it open is a very real concern and a reason to not purchase an item like this. I do appreciate your cynicism though. I tend to question people’s motives and think the worst of them as well.

It would be difficult to cut the body open. Could be done with a saw , I guess, not a pen knife. The windows are isengass, like on a boat. I’m sure those could be cut open. Difference is $4000 for a hard top or $1200 for the air topper. Also, Air Topper is easily removed from the inside and stowed.

I want to camp in the back.
Oh wait... the back is 4.5 feet long and 3.75 feet wide between the tires.

And I am not an Ommpa Loompa.
Or a lollipop kid.

Covering cargo, or animals is one thing.
Whenever I hear "camping" back there I think it is so impractical it is funny. šŸ˜…

Carry your camping gear.
Sleep on the ground for pete's sake.

P

I found a 2nd gen Tacoma lightweight aluminum canopy for $25 and removed the rear flip up window assembly. Then I used some scrap plywood to build a rear panel to fill in the entire rear section like the contractor canopies do. I found a glass sunroof panel at a used building materials store and installed that as a window in a rear plywood door cut from the new rear plywood panel. That panel is firmly attached to the inside rear of the canopy and the side space from just inside the taillights back to the rear panel is also filled in with plywood. The entire assembly is 6’ feet long inside and rests on the open tailgate at the rear and clamps to the side of the bed in 3 places on each side. The only issue is the crank down opening for the spare cannot be used when the tailgate is down. I did add selfstick reflectors to the rear panel which is about 2’ further back than the taillights and to the rear of the side panels. I used a domestic exterior door locking knob set for the rear door so it can lock and unlock inside without a key and outside with a key. It can be tilted and slid on and off by one person but is easier with two. I also attached a roof rack that I had around to the top. It could be hung from garage rafters by that and hoisted up and down with a pulley system.

I agree. I’m looking for a truck topper tent for the down tailgate. Dac makes one but I’d like to find a solution at less than $205. There a great YouTube of a guy that does some pretty rugged camping in the Maverick. He has the Air Topper and Dac tent topper. I’m getting a trifold 4ā€ foam mat. When one of the sections is doubled up it fits in the bed with the the tailgate closed. One section can go against the back while I sit on the other 2. Makes a nice little sofa.
