What is the above and its use. It came with a code number and mail-in envelope to register it, as well as the option to purchase additional ones. Trouble is, I have no idea what it is or what it’s for.

That looks like it! Thank you!Pic would help, but I’m guessing you got a tailgate lock from the dealer, the “key” opens it. Can’t take off tailgate without removing it

Folks like to steal them believe it or not. Removing it is sometimes helpful if you’re loading something super heavy and don’t want the weight on the tailgate while loadingThat looks like it! Thank you!
P.S. why would one want to remove the tailgate?
To use it to replace the tailgate stolen off your truck because you did not have the "slow down theft " bracket on your tailgate. That looks like it! Thank you!

The "key" is the same idea as a "wheel" lock, except smaller. The manufacturer, Mcgard?? Would know how many different shapes/designs there are for the key.I wish I could just happen to find one of those in my glove box! My Mav has one of these locks on it and the key wasn't included. I bought it used, completely like new and very low miles. Truck was acquired from a dealer (where it was originally sold) in Pennsylvania and shipped to the dealer where I bought it in Ohio. It came w/ it only one key fob and suspect it was either an repo or a lease return. I'd like to find one of those little tools so I can take the lock thing off. I don't have much tailgate theft risk around here and would like to be able to remove it if I ever need to.
Wait a minute...THAT'S what the "tailgate lock" is? When I ordered mine at the dealer, I asked what that optional "tailgate lock" was since the tailgate locks itself anyway, why would I need an additional lock? No one there knew what it was. They said it must be a glitch like how they had that "spray in bedliner remove" option on therePic would help, but I’m guessing you got a tailgate lock from the dealer, the “key” opens it. Those keys are miniature versions of the lug nut keys and come supposedly different patterns. Maybe search for replacement mcgard tailgate lock key????I wish I could just happen to find one of those in my glove box! My Mav has one of these locks on it and the key wasn't included. ??Previous owner or prep folks probably removed it. Certain years of Mavericks only came with one fob.
I was replying to RideSolo's post, not OP.??
I don't see how that's relevant to this thread at all...
ah. but still, every new Ford comes with 2 fobs. that's why when you get a trade in quote, they ask if you have 2 or more key fobs, because you should.I was replying to RideSolo's post, not OP.
Thank you. Yeah, thought about just destroying the thing and taking it out. Also I'm pretty sure than contacting the company wouldn't get results because of: 1. They wouldn't know what pattern to send. and 2: the probably don't sent them out, even as a purchase, for security reasons. Guess I'll just break out the Dremel if absolutely necessary. Those "keys"

ETA: Maybe put small blob of epoxy on end of Allen wrench wrapped in masking tape and let epoxy bind to tailgate lock?? Or grind something to wedge into key slots. You could break the plastic surrounding the flat (7/16" ?) hose clomp inside and then cut that strap.
I’ve seen them removed by drilling small hole in the nut and tapping it, then red thread locking a machine screw into it, seemed like overkill if you have a dremel and carbide bit, destroying it either wayThank you.
