Love it! I have personally had lumber, laundry, and a lounge chair strapped to the top of a Jeep ZJ that was full of dogs, propane, water, and groceries. Load it however you can. Give the straps a double check and keep it under 90!

No. Tying to fixed points is safe; like the tiedown loops in the bed, loops on the tailgate, onto the bedrail, etc. I'm assuming OP just had the slack from the strap tucked in the handle temporarily.
@Binjobbed technically your family was right! It definitely didn't fit! But that doesn't mean you didn't make it work - kudos!
