This RDU in the Focus RS definitely overheats with hard use. I know it can be done on a road course and there are RDU cooling kits on the market to help mitigate overheating.

What I don't know is if someone has done it in a Maverick Tremor and what circumstances caused the event. I know it seems like I'm just arguing semantics, but here are a couple of good videos, you'll probably appreciate the complexity and sophistication in the Tremor RDU a lot more.

Cutaway Focus RS RDU (same/highly similar as Tremor)

Can't find a video on the Dana rear end Ford uses in the Bronco and trucks, but this Eaton is essentially the same just beefier.

The biggest usable difference is that the locker does nothing for cornering or straight-line traction - no torque vectoring or limited slip. It is just an open differential when the locker isn't engaged. Whereas the Tremor RDU is very active in cornering, and very active at maintaining traction. It isn't a locker, but it's better than a locker for most conditions Tremor owners will encounter.

I can't speak to the Tremor's capabilities but my initial impressions of the Fx4 with the optional Wildpeaks is that it does pretty well as long as you're careful to stay out of deep ruts from other vehicles, due to the limited ground clearance. I keep a shackle hitch receiver under the back seat so I have a good recovery point in the rear, just in case.

I'm guilty of getting riled up in defense of the Tremor just as much as those defending the FX4 - we're a fickle bunch.

Beach I'd mostly agree but if you're hitting any sand dunes and hooning around with PTU locked over hot sand that is where I would expect it to possibly disengage.
You’ll be fine with either on the beach , carry a 30$ compressor air down to 18 lbs you will go absolutely anywhere most people on this forum will dare.
go tremor if you wheel a lot , especially big dune climbs and mud ( liquid cooled to being the biggest advantage for longevity)
if you want the tow capability more than off road capability and longevity in either direction …. Your choice .

Yep, OP would be fine with a Hybrid too.

OP asked which was best and the clear answer is the Tremor for the reasons I stated.

FX4 does nothing to enhance the AWD capability of the AWD maverick (I know you know this)

I appreciate it! Beach driving is something pretty new to myself, maybe a little daunting as well. While I say "beach driving" I'm talking bare minimum. I'm not looking to do anything crazy, just a nice beach day with the family, possible beach fishing, etc. I've heard that I "could" use the hybrid, just wasn't too confident in that.

Thanks again for all the help here guys!

While I can't speak to the Tremor's capabilities (I'm sure they are great), I can tell you that the FX4 is a very capable soft off road vehicle. Case in point, I was at my gun range the other day and I had my target set at 50 yards. My range is pretty much all red Florida sand and there was plenty of deep sand there. After I was done shooting, I was too tired to walk the 50 yards to retrieve my target stand (I'm 69 years old and way out of shape) so I drove my FX4 to the target. I set the drive mode to sand and had no problems, even with the deep sand. I was kind of proud of my little FX4 Maverick although I'm sure my previous XL AWD Maverick could have done just as well.

Best for beach driving?

Tires. Tires. Tires.

Airt down and carry a shovel/something to place under the tires for grip. Then it doesn't matter what you drive. FWD, RWD, 4WD, AWD... they should all do just fine with the right tires (assuming you are smart enough to stay away from the quicksand).

It looks like you have the Falken Wildpeaks, which would make a huge difference in sand compared to the standard Fx4 tires.

Yes they are indeed Falken Wildpeaks. When I ordered my '23 Maverick I made sure to get the upgraded wheels and tires.
