Truck cap clamps- are these secure?

It seems like its securing to plastic trim and is in no way secure. What clamps do you recommend?

It doesn't clamp on the the metal rail that is just under the part covered in plastic?

Actually it does attach to the metal rail, and it's plenty secure for its intent.

i kind of regret my alibaba choice. not all alibaba tops are equal

Most of the tonneau covers attach to the steel rail, but that cover's bracket does look far from ideal.
I got an Autosave8 from Jeffy B's online marketplace, and it's a much cleaner and unobtrusive design.
