We took a trip with the nieces and nephew up to Poli Poli on Maui. We just did a basic picnic cruise up to the high ridge and back down. Its a fun way to go up the mountain. After 5000ft its all offroad, but you can only drive to about 8500ft. Still alot of fun, some good switchbacks and some good rutted shortcuts down in the meadow at the bottom of the asphalt switchbacks. Really beautiful, today we had the clouds roll in and mist on us. Yes the ground is so porous(its all cinder) that it is usually dry so lots of dusty climbs up some of the stuff. Its like switchbacks up a coarse sand dune with a bit of gravel mixed in. We only got a little footage since we had the kids and I dont like to make Josi run up the trails too much with her lung damage at altitude. Well enjoy!

Josi also took a cool panorama shot while I was packing the dogs up after the picnic.
Also here are afew screen grabs of google earth if anyone is ever visiting out here and rents a 4wd. Its rarely packed on this side of the mountain like it is at the Haleakala Summit. Lots of hiking and biking trails, thats what the red lines are. There is a cabin(with a reservation), a frisbee golf course, amazing smelling redwood and eucalyptus trees. Just a beautiful place. Even just going to the lower meadow to overlook the valley between the two mountains of Maui, excellent spot for a picnic or sunset. You can also watch paragliders and model airplane flyers there.

Also given the Tremors 1200lb payload, we were probably right at the max rated payload capacity. With the road being pretty rough, it was a bit bouncy but never bottomed out or anything. Really love this truck, I have yet to fail at getting through something.

This is amazing!
We just visited Haleakala but only did the paved road to the top.
I would have loved to have explored more particularly the unpaved sections.

Next time you come just go past where you made that last turn before taking you up the mountain from Kula. You drive another few minutes to Waipoli Rd that takes you straight up for a minute to the Lavender Farm(another cool place that the ladies and plant lovers enjoy). From there it's a bunch of switchbacks through a meadow type pasture. There is a few criss cross trails here from mild to wild. Then you climb up another half hour maybe until you get to the dirt section. Only towards the end does it get challenging and that's where 4x4 becomes necessary. It's really awesome up there, not quite as high as the crater but another world entirely.

You can also come by Twin Falls Farms and I can give ya in person directions or maybe go show ya around up there if schedules line up.

I'll definitely take that trip next time I am out there. Hopefully soon!
