To start, I know there are a lot of transmission threads and I have an appointment with the dealer scheduled for this coming Thursday.

I bought my truck at the end of September and it was built in mid August (XLT, 2.0, AWD with 4k tow). When I saw it listed for sale online, the dealer said it was ordered but hadn't arrived yet. I hadn't driven a Maverick yet but they had another XLT on the lot that was 2.0, FWD and no 4k tow. I figured test driving it would at least give me an idea of how these trucks drive. The first thing I noticed was how smooth the transmission shifted and I liked everything about it so I put a deposit down on the one that I saw online.

When I went to pick up mine, I test drove it before signing the paper work. Immediately I noticed the transmission was shifting harshly and it seemed like the truck was struggling to get going from a stop. I had read a lot about these symptoms specifically with the AWD and 4k tow combo so I was hoping it was just that and the fact that I would need to get used to this transmission (my car for 7 years before this had a CVT).

Over the next few weeks the transmission behavior didn't improve. Harsh shifting in the lower gears, the dreaded resonating/rumbling sound while cruising between 35 and 55 MPH and one time while cruising at 55 MPH it abruptly upshifted out of no where while driving on a completely flat stretch of road. I decided to disconnect the battery to reset the adaptive learning. Upon leaving my driveway, I laughed as I threw myself back in the seat since the responsiveness was that much different. It felt like a completely different truck so I took it to a nearby business park and did several controlled accelerations in hopes of giving the adaptive learning a baseline. I then drove about 100 miles that day with a good mix of in town, back roads and highway driving. The shifts were much better (though still not great) and the resonating/rumbling sound while cruising was completely gone! The very next day I pull out of my driveway and noticed the harsh shifting was back and once I got on the main road the rumbling sound was back too.

Since then, some days it drives like it did the first day of the adaptive relearn - better shifts and no rumbling. Other days, it shifts so poorly and with the rumbling sound that I've almost just dropped it off at the dealer. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this behavior - cold vs warm weather, engine up temp or not, etc. it seems to be completely random. It also seems to be better if the truck sits for a couple of days without being driven. I just went over 5,000 miles and I've never towed anything with it. I'll update after my dealer visit on Thursday.

No such issues with the tranny on my 24 Lariat with 4k. Towed from MA to Jackman ME last week, first tow and was impressed as how it handled my new 13 foot snowmobile trailer.

I just replaced my trans fluid, I swear it looked like chocolate milk even at 24k miles. Will be curious to see how the shifting is after driving it a bit- I haven't had shifting issues per say its just the normal odd programmed shifting pattern that Ford uses that seems to delay power shifts when asked to do so.

My appointment was coded as an oil change only and not diagnostic so the dealer wouldn't look at the transmission issue...

However, the few days leading up to the appointment, the transmission started acting much better and that has continued since then. It's still not great, but it's close to being "normal". Does the adaptive learning constantly learn and adapt, or does it only do that for a set period of time after being reset and it then stays with that programming until it's reset again?

I didn't notice much of a difference in the way my transmission shifted after the fluid change but might say in your case that the easiest thing to do would be to go thru the fluid leveling/fill check procedure and or just replace the fluid all together which I did.

Mine will be going in soon to have the transmission diagnosed. I wonder if the 12v battery issues might be causing the TCM to have issues?
