I traded a 2000 Ford Lightning in in 2001 with nearly bald tires and only 5,000 miles on it. I sprayed tire shine on the tread that was remaining, and drove to the dealer. The darker grooves made the lack of tread less noticeable. Nothing was said or deducted for the tires. A bit unethical, but nothing a dealer wouldn't do to sell it either. I got $3,700 less than I paid for the truck new on trade. And $6,500 off sticker on the truck I traded for. It was a fun truck though.Tires. My Escape needs new tires but after looking at KBB this morning, trading it in for the Maverick is a no brainer (I'm going to net ~$5,000). So, how much will the tires hurt if I don't replace them ahead of time? Will the dealer hit me for just the cost of the tires meaning my net out of pocket would be the same either way, or will the tires be discounted in the trade enough to make getting new ones beforehand worth the investment?
