Cliffs Notes: This is the 2nd Toyota Corolla GR that has had an engine failure recently, with warranty denied, because the owner drove 85mph.

The owner captured it all on dashcam which shows they did nothing unusual with only 23K miles on it, engine grenaded itself, with a hole in the engine, and pulled over.

This is going viral because it's completely nonsense on the reason for the warranty denial, because a Corolla GR is sold as a "track ready" vehicle with a track mode, 85mph is not excessive considering its sold with tires rated for close to 200mph.

With all the Toyota transmission and engine failures making the news lately (280K 2022–2024 Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, and Lexus LX 600 for transmission issues and additional 102K for machining debris in engine), they are rapidly destroying their reputation for reliability and a good warranty.

It's a 3 cylinder 300 horsepower engine. Turbocharged.
SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE.
1.6 liters. 97 ci. Over 3 hp per ci.
People who buy these things have more dollars than sense.

Its even WORSE than we thought...

Claims are just rubber stamping anything to do with a engine fire on Corolla GRs with the exact same language:
"Like Mr. Banks, Sebastian says it was difficult to get Toyota's comment on the matter. He told the publication that it took a month to get the car inspected, with nobody taking his calls.

And it gets worse. Once Sebastian and Banks reached out to each other on Reddit, they discovered that Toyota assigned the same Legal Claims Analyst to their respective cases. Both customers got the same letter, with the same dates, even though Banks' fire occurred on June 8, and not May 3.

This is not a good look for Toyota, as its reputation has been built on customer care and reliability. Perhaps Toyota should take a leaf out of Koenigsegg's book and replace these burnt vehicles for free." Source: https://carbuzz.com/toyota-gr-corolla-fire-warranty-claims-denied/
As of now, various publications have reached out to Toyota, and can not get anyone to comment.

I think people are more stressed not that there are engine failures, but that Toyota is telling its customers of brand new in-warranty vehicles to proverbially "suck it" because they drove over 85mph, as if that absolves them of all responsibility for fixing the vehicle.

It also pulls into question "connected" vehicles, that they will be phoning home what used to be private information that corporate can use to deny warranty claims.

If they said "hey, you haven't done an oil change in 20K miles" or better "so sorry, we are replacing your defective engine, please enjoy a courtesy vehicle", I don't think anyone would be up in arms.

OH, your heart will start revving, when Toyota tells you that you that, because you took your
'Track Built GR' to the track and exceeded 85 MPH. You have no warranty 😵

I remember when my 1993 Miata FX7-R1 water pump failed. Mazda sent out a factory engineering team to Little Rock, Arkansas to examine my engine, fixed it for me under warranty, and the team autographed the inside of my hood at my request.

Totally different era. Today is all short-term MBAs looking to hit the quarterly numbers to earn their oversized bonuses.
