So what do you use the Ford Cross Bars for?

I understand the use of the ones that are above the bed, but what is the use for the ones that fit into the track in the bed.
This is my first truck so this is a real question. I tried google but only pictures I found were of the high ones.
And the ford site just shows the bars not what to do with them.
