Last night I left my Mav parked outside considering that the temps here today are unseasonably summuresque. We had some rain during the night and this morning as I drive down my driveway while opening the optioned sunroof I get drenched with a sizable second shower of the day. Not sure what to make out of it. The roof was not dripping... I'm thinking that somehow the water infiltrated around the roof and was let in the moment I opened it. I don't see where else the water could accumulate.

Not super worried until more investigation will take place but definitely not happy either right now.

With most factory sunroofs there's a small drain hose that goes down each side's 'A' pillar. with the roof retracted, I'd check the front corners of the opening to ensure nothing is plugged. I've not had that happen with a new vehicle, but I've had to clean out my (always parked outside) '09 Ford Focus on at least three occasions. The opening is about the size of a pipe-cleaner, or a trombone cleaning brush also works decently.

easy to test the problem with a water hose or sprinkler. Post when you know.

I would tilt my moonroof forward on my Mazda and that always got any rain off. Sucks that this moonroof doesn’t have a tilt option.

I get the same effect on my 2014 Fiesta if I open the moonroof when water is standing on it. I recommend following @Lil Truck 's advice (I do).

Same on my 2011 Lexus. Made that mistake once and never again.

I had a similar thing happen 2x's before. My Maverick is wet 90% of the time living here in the Pacific NW. Never noticed any actual leaking while closed before. Only when I open it when it was recently very wet. I think in both instances I was going above 45 MPH too when I opened it.

My Maverick sunroof tilts up and vents out the back. Or fully retracts into roof. 2 settings.

Could you treat the sunroof glass with rain x? Would the water have anywhere to go?

Oh then that must mean the water got trapped between the moonroof and the sliding layer underneath? That’s not good lol

Some pics would have made this more interesting.

There is of course a necessary metal machined gutter that runs around the edge of your moonroof. This can gather a sizeable amount of water plus the standing water that already existed on the roof before you engaged the retractor. A shower is completely normal with this type of roof. I can recite several examples going all the way back to my 84 Lincoln Continental of this behavior being completely normal. Never interfered with the electronics never interfered with the motor it's simply as Burt Bacharach would say raindrops falling on your head.
