Just discovered a nice hollow space behind the usb and 12v horizontal ‘drawer’ with power and usb connections available to run an inexpensive raspberry pi computer board and display the ‘computer’ on the stock infotainment system.
Anyone else interested in such an undertaking?

I wrote an engineering software package in linux a decade ago and ported it to the raspberry pi board a few years ago. It takes a long time to calculate and convert to 3D models so speed is helpful but not needed. Energy saving was the main factor.
As a result I generally carry a running raspberry on trips, playing game emulators as my software runs in the background. This would be one less item to carry/pack if built into truck.

First question: all hidden or ports/power visible?
Its easy to tap power/port of usb old 4 wired style for hidden. But the usb-c port offers more power, bidirectional port (the raspberry pi can be used as an usb hub with usb-c connection) but not practical to tap from behind the socket.

Why would you want a low powered computer for your truck…. Why not!
There are more expensive devices to play games and run videos on your built in infotainment display. Those are likely closed source android sticks. This is a open and free OS computer. Want a calculator app no problem its a free computer software download no Google account needed. Secondly its a full normal browser, video playback and 4 usb ports for adding anything else.

Still moving on this idea. There is an issue getting a pi4 currently. Think I have two, but may have given one to my friend with our shared 3D printer. The other is well a gift and not a standard setup ( has own battery and display)
There is another idea from my 3d printer friend is a cheap tv box that can run linux or android. Looking into that as a backup, because of lack of pi.

How would this work with the infotainment system?

wait….

Are you telling me there’s a chance I could play Mario on the infotainment screen?

interestingly enough, I work for a leading global electronics distributor and could possibly obtain such a device 😈

LOL, your comment forced me to go out to my truck and try with Screen2Auto on my Android phone. It works.

Please do document this endeavor here as you go along.

I am very interested to see how you do it and in what applications to the truck you think up for which to use it.

Considering that there are already a few ways to get whatever we want up on the screen, I don't see a need for a Pi in the truck.

Also, vehicle interiors get VERY hot, and Pi systems don't deal well with heat, since they already run hot.

Agreed, that is way my friends idea for a android tv box 18$ shipped from China seems practical.

I was actually thinking about this the other day looking at the screen.

I wonder how hard it would be to tap the screen with a pi and the systems of the truck and get tinkering with a android automotive build for it.

I haven't played with android in quite a while since tinkering with phones burned me out since my last project but this could be quite a interesting project to work on for me.

Sad bad news, got a usb-C to usb-C power data cable and the Maverick doesn’t have enough power at dashboard to run pi4, the rear seat plug does but not connected to infotainment system. Project halted.

The earlier raspberry pi's have less power requirements.

Less power also means less heat. Could also power externally and not through the USB port of course.
