Ford part #: NZ6Z60286A72A. Question: Is the box insert robust enough to store my trailer hitch and spare ball? Or will the bottom break out and send my hitch tumbling down the interstate in the path of other vehicles?

You mean the one in the side of the bed? Somewhere I remember hearing 20 pound limit. Not sure where I heard it so take that with a grain of salt. 🙃

Yes, the side of the bed. The hitch, of course, is less than 20#, but I would worry about a five pound 2 inch steel tube bouncing around. I may just have to stick to tie down straps and such.

Not topic related. I just want to say your dog pic is so freaking cute.

He’s a Maltese/Yorkie mix (Morkie). It’s a good thing he’s cute because he’s kind of a jerk. The pic was when he was a puppy, he’s all white now.

Wrap it in a rag? Bonus is then you have a rag if you need one.

Just think if Ford made it with more durable metal. Or a 3rd party firm.

I would be interested in a very small storage box/compartment very low profile, to storage a small floor jack snd some tools in the back of the bed, at the lower corners, reaching L to R sides. Prob something sized in the order of the rear seat storage compartment.

You mean like the swing out storage boxes that mount to the rear right and left inside of the bed that ford sells in the accessoriy store?

I am pretty sure I saw the 20 lb. limit marked on the box when I installed mine. When I saw this I had the same thought as the OP about carrying a hitch in it.

I've stored my hitch in the cubby for a year or so. No problems so far. The cubby came with the truck.

I wouldnt be overly concerned. Maybe put 1 ratchet strap in the bottom to give it cushion against cracking but thats not totally necessary. You would be suprised how stable the forces are in the rear area of a truck. I have driven over 50 miles of mixed city hwy before with a pair of pliers sitting on a bumper. Never moved an inch.

It is fairly heavy plastic. If your hitch is a solid non-tube design that may push the limit but if its tube. no big deal.

I’m aware of these. But not what I have in mind. Would like shadow, narrow box to sit on the floor of the bed, just big enough to fit a small floor jack, and some tools, like socket and torque wrench. I have have these tools and more due to traveling with a 5th wheel RV, which I sold.

I seen a fella who had tool box and secured it to his bed with ratchet straps. This way can be easily removed if need more hauling space.
