Update: Since getting it back from Ford diagnostics, there has not been a single repeat of these warnings, so haven't been able to check if it "limps" into FWD mode when it does this or any other power distribution glitches. Dealer says they still want to replace it to be safe once the part comes in. Hope I didn't just jinx myself.... 🙄

Thanks for the update. I only had this message once (over 2 weeks ago) and it has not reappeared since...Glad your problem was diagnosed!

Well, it did end up failing a couple more times before the PTU came in so Ford could change it. Was random times too...nothing like "under acceleration" or anything like that - one time was in a parking lot! So it went into the shop for the PTU change.....and stayed there for over a month because they broke an exhaust clamp and couldn't get another one to finish putting it back together. But other than that....it's been great, no more issues. That car rental had to have cost Ford WAY more than the price of an exhaust clamp. There's just so little parts out there right now.

Well sucks they had to put you in a car rental for a month. At least that is a month less wear and tear on your Maverick

Yep, unfortunately this is the latest added to my list of various issues (some minor, some not) that I've experienced with my Maverick since purchased in Dec. 2021.

The scenario:

At about 4K miles, I got in my truck to go to work one morning (happened to be my birthday), turned the key and it cranked up as usual with no hesitation but immediately popped up the "AWD fault Service required" message. I pushed the ok button to acknowledge on my steering controls, then the complimentary "Service vehicle soon" message popped up. I seem to remember, but can't swear to it, noticing that the engine idle seemed to be a little lower or maybe sounded slightly off timing wise. So, I turned the engine off, waited for a couple seconds, then turned it back on and the two message duo... AWD fault... and Service vehicle soon... messages both appeared once again as before. I powered off/on the engine one more time, hoping that this would clear it this time, but the same results appeared yet again. So, I decided to start my trek down the road for a piece, to see if that may reset the fault warning messages. Low and behold, that worked...so then I power cycled the engine a couple of more times just to make sure it didn't pop right back up, and fortunately, it did not.

I made it to work with no issues and it hasn't appeared since. I'm at 5,090 miles at the time of this post and no more warnings since.

I've got a service appt. scheduled for Aug. 1st to have them address this and a few other matters, so we'll see what they tell me then.

I'll update after that, when I get a chance.

Seems like Ford Quality was definitely not JOB ONE in this instance
