All these pretty photos yet A.I. struggles with simple math.

Who's the resident A.I. expert and where is he now? I asked a math problem 4 times and got 4 different answers. And if wasn't a hard math problem (for a human).

"How many gallons does 500 feet of 6 inch pipe hold?"

If you use ft. Instead of feet it messes up.

If you use in. Instead of inch it messes up.

If you use " instead if inch it messes up.

If you add or delete a space in the question, it messes up.

And sometimes it just moves the decimal to the wrong place for no reason. Weird. And some people want this to drive cars and fly planes?

Over the last year or so I've played with several of the AI tools and I would consider myself more tech savvy than the average bear based on my prior work in the tech field and overall life experience. It has gotten better, in some cases significantly so, in a fairly short period of time. And there's a variety of factors that go into writing a good prompt such that it will provide a good answer (the old idea of "garbage in, garbage out" still applies). However, even with all of that said, there is a huge amount of hype around all of this and it's a long way from taking all the jobs and running the world in a way the doomsayers would have us believe.

My advice to anyone using these tools regularly for anything other than just having fun would be to always keep in mind that these systems are designed to maximize human engagement by agreeing with anything you say even it it has to completely make stuff up to do so. Additionally, they still suffer from "hallucinations" which basically means if it can't find an answer to something asked, it just makes it up. So always be skeptical of what it's telling you. When you use these tools, keep your Spidey senses sharp and verify, verify, verify - from a different non-AI source if at all possible - especially for anything really important.

Ok, I'll step off my soapbox now.

You wrote "... these systems are designed to maximize human engagement by agreeing with anything you say even it it has to completely make stuff up to do so..."

And that's so true! I asked Gemini for a muffler replacement and Gemini keeps telling me the downpipe is 2.5" diameter from stock muffler, so I let her know I took measurements and it's 2.25" not 2.5"... so now Gemini gave me the reason and changed her speech to the 2.25"... and I didn't even took that measurements...

I need to stop by my local muffler shop to make sure haha 😄

Yeah and I can give you another example along these lines. I've tried on multiple occasions to research things I'm interested in and I when I ask for pricing, it always comes back way off. Even when I tell it it's off and specifically ask it to do a search and obtain current 2026 pricing, it still comes back with what looks like pre-pandemic prices on many occasions. I've just found too many errors like this along the way to fully trust what it's giving me.

Try to get AI to give you a picture of "A pair of dice showing a double six". For some reason it can't do it.

I use Perplexity since it does not want to chat with me or love me. It only answers questions or makes images. I asked it to "draw a pair of dice showing double sixes" and I got this which is not showing real dice but it does show the double sixes.

I asked for the definition of Pi
I got this :

Pi (π) is a fundamental mathematical constant defined as the ratio of any circle's circumference (the distance around) to its diameter (the distance across). It is an irrational number, approximately
3.14159
, meaning its decimal representation never ends and never repeats. The ratio remains constant regardless of the circle's size.

Odds are you got/landed on a bot like ChatGpt.
or some other renegade info program.
Happens all the time.
A I is often lurking in the background and passing the buck through/to ChatGPT.
Think of it as a filter that clogs up.
A.I. is still a child.
That will soon surpass all human knowledge and intelligence.

No one will recognize it as a program by this time next year.
