Google maps also shows speed limits if you enable it in settings.

I find that Google Maps will show the speed limit maybe 10% of the time, when Waze is probably 95% of the time.

That is true, but Waze is also far better at reporting police and accidents.

Waze is community driven - speed limits are added by other Waze users who login to the Waze Map Editor and fix their local area. So it can be great where you have some folks nearby who volunteer their time, but be sparse elsewhere.

While owned by Google, the two don't share all information between the companies, and Google doesn't disclose where they get their data. I'm sure they have some algorithm of databases, street view detection, speed data of Android users, etc. that is vetted by their own legal team.
