If I knew of any cheaper alternatives, I would have bought that instead! I know what you mean though.Golly thats pricey! Know of any cheaper alternatives?
I prefer hard folding covers. Soft ones don't hold up too long, billow in the wind, and can't handle a heavy snow load. The metal roll-ups are bulky, as are retractable ones, but those are hard to use in the winter for other reasons. So that leaves hard folding covers, and there are a lot of options. Most of them use a honeycomb or other semi-structural core which is covered by plastic or aluminum sheeting. They're nice and can support a bit of weight, and some can flip up behind the cab to open up more of the bed, which is very useful. But after a while water can get into the core and cause problems, and they also tend to have large rails that attach to the bed, which is fine, but those can be in the way some of the time.
The Diamondback doesn't have any rails to attach, it clamps directly to the bed. However, it doesn't flip up behind the cab, the front section is what attaches to the bed with 4 C-clamps. That's not the most ideal for open bed space, and it's really the only potential downside, other than the price. The cover is really solid and can be quickly removed if needed by loosening 4 bolts. It also supports the most weight on top of the cover out of anything I've seen.
It was also appealing to me that they're not owned by a private equity firm. Bak, Extang, Truxedo, and most others are owned by huge corporate investment companies that seem to care more about profits than quality these days.
The cover on my F350 is made by Renegade, which made the price on the Diamondback a little more tolerable for me. But you're not wrong, they're pretty expensive.
