Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while and read many posts before ordering my 25. I went with XLT hybrid 4k tow, lux package, azure grey. I stayed right on budget and would up with a good (for the times rate) from a local credit union.
Thanks to the forum I ordered the tux mats floor liners despite not liking the way they looked in pictures and they are amazing in person.
So far I'm very happy with everything and don't find the interior as "cheap" as some say. I think it's a good value from r the utility that I'm picking up.
One one area of concern is the first tank fuel economy. I'm currently struggling to get more that 28 mpg overall and some sort trips are only like 17mpg. It's been below 20 since I picked it up so Ive also tried turning off the heated seats and steering wheel. I realize that the cold and winter gas affect fuel economy but I wasn't expecting sub 30 mpg with the seat and steering wheel turned off. I also drove quite conservative and achieved 98-100% Regen on every stop and try to pull away from lights with very little throttle.
So if anyone could chip in and ease my mind. Is this a break in thing? Maybe the MPG calculation is off from not even using it's first tank? I hope it gets better.
Further info would be that the truck has 150miles and my trips are currently about 20 miles with a few shorter trips to the gym and grocery store.

Hybrids get better MPG in warm weather. That's the norm. Plus, your truck is adjusting to your driving habits. The computer is constantly adjusting based on where you drive and how long. And you have AWD, so that has to factored in. Give it a tank or two. At each fill up, you mileage should improve.

Hey Matt, if you leave the steering and seats on and instead turn off the heater as soon as it gets above freezing in the cab then the electric will get more of a chance to run without the need of the engine to produce heat for you. I now have just over 250 miles on mine and have gotten my overall average up to 32.9 by killing the heat as soon as I can stand it.
Congrats on getting your hybrid, mine is carbonized grey but otherwise just like yours.

Good suggestion, this is the same strategy that a lot of EV drivers use with good results.

150 miles is too soon to judge the mpg. Give it some time. Wait until you have at least 800-1,000 miles on it. It will get better. Also, read about AFE bias on this site. You need to do the actual math calculation when you fill up the tank. The computer readout is not always accurate.

USE the seat & steering wheel heaters and turn down/off the cabin heater. Cabin heater makes the gasoline engine run hella lot more than the other heaters. Your cabin heat comes from the hot coolant circulating in the heater core. It is waste heat from running the gas engine.

Once broken in, your Hybrid should get better mileage. Also, enable the EV Coach and Brake Coach displays. Those show you when you're using electric for moving and regenerative braking for stopping (instead of the brake pads).

Google "pulse & glide" driving. The EV coach screen helps you learn how to drive using that method of maximizing EV use. It's more useful in warmer months, when correct hybrid driving will allow you to have more control over whether the gas engine runs or not.

Annual average MPG will be excellent, with the Hybrid + driving habits that can maximize it.

Thanks for the replies. I figured I'd need to drive it for a while but just wanted the reassurance. I'll also try turning off the cabin heat

No need to do that IMO. Just set it to a cooler temp and let the heated seats and steering wheel keep you warm. For example, in my Mach-E I will set the cabin temp to 65-68*F and leave it on auto. I then let the heated seats and wheel keep me warm. Even though they use electricity they use less than the cabin climate.

Keep in mind I don't do this all the time only when trying to maximize my range in the colder months on long trips. Most of the time I keep my cabin temp set at 70-72*F year around.
