Size wise it compares very closely to our 2011/Highlander- Remove hatch space and replace with a truck bed. Lots of times that I do not want to put items in the rear cargo area of an SUV, such as wet kayaking gear, stinky/greasy BBQ after camping, a lawnmower, gas cans/etc.

Sold my 340K mile 2005 Camry and will use the Mav as my daily commuter. Will be great to haul 70# Pittie and 9 year old twins in the back seat. Also I think my wife will like to drive it given the size seems as small as her Sante Fe SUV. Who knows, may sell her SUV and buy a second at the XL price then in 6 years the twins can drive them! Will still have the '87 Ranger for 6' loads and junk (it's got a bed liner).

Well, I'm a sample size of one, but my journey was to go look at a compact SUV/crossover, the new 2022 Tucson hybrid as a more fuel efficient and easier to park replacement for the truck since I'm past 150K miles now but that still has some utility to it.

In the process I learned about the upcoming Santa Cruz based on the same chassis but with a short bed, so wanted to wait for that. Like it, but not happy the base engine is not a hybrid and the turbo so expensive.

Then I learned about the Ford equivalent that does come in a hybrid at a great price, so now I'm waiting to test drive that.

So there's probably quite a few of us that are crossover shoppers that are, uh, crossing over to compact pickups.

One thing a crossover can do that a small pickup can't though is get extra length by folding the seats down. I hope that someday they bring back that feature from the Avalanche and Baja where you can extend the bed into the cab OR steal the total rear dropping glass from Toyota where with a hard tonneau cover and some straps you could extend long things into the cab that way, although having it lower down is probably safer in an accident.

The Mav is the truck I've been looking for for years. Never wanted or needed a big truck so I bought a 2005 Ranger a few years back, sold it after about 6 months, horrible to drive and still very thirsty for a small thing. I went to an Audi A4 wagon and bought a utility trailer then later to a Golf Alltrack which gave me the AWD of the Audi as well as a little bit more ride height as I live in the mountains. This little truck ticks all the boxes, size, gas mileage, small bed, 4k towing for a small travel trailer (future purchase) and sensible price. The Alltrack will be traded in on the Mav, I'll be sad to see it go as it's been fantastic.

I was thinking if you add a topper what is the difference between a Maverick with a topper and a SUV ?

Ok so take this with a grain of salt, since I have not driven the Maverick and have no basis for these thoughts other than having driven trucks, SUVs and sedans.

My take is the Camry/accords are probably going to have a better driving experience than a Maverick. Things like build quality, road noise and interior comfort are "probably" better in the midsize sedans.

Compact sedans "might" be closer in the road noise and overall build quality, but that will vary even within the compact category by what make/options you have.
Yeah but in price (for the hybrid) it’s closer to a Honda Civic (which admittedly is now basically exactly the same as the accord but cheaper), or around a similarly equipped Hyundai Elantra. I had a 2017 Elantra and it was totally fine for what it was, never had any complaints.

SUV rear compartments are often not segmented like a truck with a topper is, and larger SUVs have third rows. Functionally this means less man mover potential and the loss of air conditioned storage (Sometimes that matters, mostly it doesnt).

I am buying this instead of another Subaru Forester. It is comparable. The outside storage is key along with the low bed height. I expect the ride and handling to be good enough for long trips. The better gas mileage is a bonus.
