So, I got my maverick on Saturday of this last week and I was ecstatic to be filling out paperwork! I got the base model in every respect with the velocity blue paint job.

Anyway,
I was wondering if it would be possible to make a copy of the key (not the fob but just the piece that turns the ignition) so that I can have something separate from the fob that I can use to start the truck without havig my keychain hanging off the ignition and hitting my leg every time I experience a change in motion of any kind. Is there a proximity sensor or something that the ignition requires for the key to be able to start the truck or should they work interdependently of each other if I say... cast a new one out of aluminum or brass (Effectively making it a low-tech spare key)

You'd need to have a basic PATS key cut and then programmed to the vehicle. There's a chip in the key that the vehicle needs to recognize.

What Is Ford SecuriLock® Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS)?
SecuriLock is an engine immobilization system. It helps to prevent anyone from starting the engine without using a coded key programmed to your vehicle.
Using the wrong key could prevent the engine from starting. If you are unable to start the engine with a correctly coded key, there is a problem with the system. Contact your Ford Dealer to have your vehicle inspected.

You can get the standard h101 high security key and have it cut - currently the dealer is about the only one than can program for now - waiting for machine updates.

May need to get the dealer to cut/order the key for you but programing a 3rd key is typically a simple process. It's when you don't have 2 existing programmed keys that it requires special programing by the dealer.

Here's the procedure with a Lariat's push-button start and proximity key fob, the process is nearly the same with a traditional key fob.

I always for get that due to the fact I always use a programmer. Ill have to check on the Maverick on adding 3rd. Some of the new Fords wont allow that

I don't understand the motivation here.

Key by itself in the ignition, nothing "dangles", nothing to hit your knee.

Sounds like all your OTHER keys are the problem.

Get a carabiner or other $5 quick disconnect device for your other keys.
Problem solved.

Lets not make a mountain out of a mole hill.

The issue is not my other keys. The issue is the annoyance of extra steps involved with removing a key off a carabiner every time I sit in my truck. I'm 6'4" so I take up more space than most in my truck and anything attached will hit my legs.

The idea is that if I can make a small device that is independent of my keychain, I can either hide it somewhere in the truck or keep it attached to a bracelet by magnets or something to make it as small of an extra step as possible to put it in the ignition and turn it.

I also like having extra space in my pocket not taken up by something as bulky as a large key. I guess it just seems nice to be able to have everything as small and unobtrusive as possible. It frees up my movements

So you have a key that you have attached to a keychain…. And you want basically another key that’s not attached to the keychain?
Didn’t you get two keys?
Leave one key in the truck and lock it with the other
Or leave one key in the truck and lock and unlock via keypad or phone app

Maybe I’m missing what you are saying

If you need a third key the dealer will sell you one
